The Strade Sicure Operation
Since August 4, 2008, the Italian Army has been carrying out the "Strade Sicure" Operation throughout the national territory, in compliance with Law no. 125 of July 24, 2008, and Law no. 178 of December 30, 2020. The operation, extended to respond to extraordinary needs for crime and terrorism prevention and contrast, employs a considerable contingent of military personnel from the Armed Forces.
The "Strade Sicure" Operation represents a significant commitment of the Italian Army in terms of men, means, and materials. The first contingent, consisting of 3,000 men and women of the Italian Army, was employed to guard sensitive sites and objectives, including Immigration Centers, as well as for reconnaissance and patrol tasks in collaboration with the Police Forces.
Today, according to the site of the Chamber of Deputies, we have about 5,000 units, with peaks of over 7,000 military personnel in 2021.
The preparation of the military personnel involved in the operation includes specific activities to face the urban context, interact with the citizenry, and use force in a proportionate, discriminated, and legitimate manner when necessary. Particular attention is paid to maintaining a balanced presence on the territory, balancing the need to face unpredictable threats with the protection of the civilian population.
Over the years, the "Strade Sicure" Operation has adapted its numerical consistency in response to specific events and security needs, such as international events (EXPO 2015, G7), natural disasters (earthquakes, weather events), and emergency situations (COVID-19 Emergency).
The military personnel involved in the operation have promptly responded to various emergency situations in recent years, including the earthquake in Ischia, the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, and weather events in different Italian regions.
The Command and Control component of the operation ensures close cooperation with the Public Security Authorities, reconfiguring services based on local needs and providing logistical, administrative, and health support.
In conclusion, the "Strade Sicure" Operation represents an important contribution to the country's security.
