ROME – From September 6 to 8, 2026, the historic Palazzo Salviati – home to the Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa (CASD) – hosted the first Defense Strategic Foresight Workshop. The event was organized by the Ufficio Generale Strategia Militare (UGSMI) of the Defense General Staff, with specialist support from the instructors of Longviews Srl.
A synergistic and international approach
The initiative drew broad and diverse participation, underscoring the importance of a joint and interministerial approach to planning. Representatives from the Defense General Staff and the Armed Forces, liaison officers from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, as well as delegates from the Office of the Minister of Defense, the Scuola Nazionale dell’Amministrazione (SNA), the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), and the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), attended the meeting.
What Strategic Foresight is and its role in Defense
Strategic Foresight is a structured discipline that enables organizations to anticipate change, identify weak signals, and prepare for multiple future scenarios in complex and volatile environments. In the defense context, adopting this methodology forms part of the path set out by the National Military Strategy 2025, which highlighted the need to strengthen long-term analysis and planning capabilities. Through practical exercises and mixed working groups of military and civilian personnel, participants examined tools for mapping emerging trends and drivers of change (drivers of change). This work will support the drafting of the first Defense Strategic Foresight Analysis, a key document that will provide the conceptual and analytical foundations for guiding decisions on the future National Military Strategy.
Certificate presentation and upcoming events
Alongside the workshop activities, General Alessandro Grassano, head of UGSMI, and Dr.Gabriele Rizzo, Executive Partner at Longviews, presented certificates to attendees of the Introductory Strategic Foresight Course, held in June and September.
The program will continue shortly: the second in-depth workshop is already scheduled from November 10 to 12, 2026 at Caserma "De Cicco," in the Cecchignola Military City in Rome.
