Archangel Michael: the Patron Saint of Paratroopers

Archangel Michael: the Patron Saint of Paratroopers

The name Michael derives from the expression Mi-ka-El which means "who is like God?". Archangel Michael is remembered for defending faith in God against the hordes of Satan. Michael, commander of the heavenly hosts, initially alongside Lucifer (Satan) in representing the angelic pair, later separates from Satan and the angels who break away from God, remaining faithful to Him, while Satan and his hosts fall into the Inferno. Archangel Michael is depicted as a warrior, carrying a sword.

In the Catholic liturgical calendar, "Saint Michael the Archangel" is celebrated on September 29, along with Saint Gabriel the Archangel and Saint Raphael the Archangel.

Paratrooper's Prayer

Eternal, Immense God, who created the infinite spaces and measured their mysterious depths, look kindly upon us.
Paratroopers of Italy, who in the fulfillment of duty, leaping from our aircraft, launch ourselves into the vastness of the skies.
Send Archangel Gabriel St. Michael as our guardian; guide and protect the daring flight.
Like mist in the sun, may our enemies be scattered before us.
As white as the silk of the parachute may our faith always be, and indomitable our courage.
Our young life is yours, O Lord!
If it is written that we fall, so be it!
But from every drop of our blood may arise vigorous sons and countless brothers, proud of our past, always worthy of our inevitable future.
Bless, O Lord, our Homeland, our Families, our Loved Ones! For them, at dawn and at sunset, always our life!
And for us, O Lord, Your glorifying smile.
So be it.
