Army Parachutist General 'Aquila 1' Carmine Masiello is officially in command of the Army.
On a day marked by deep respect and solemnity, the 'Abba' barracks in the 'Cecchignola' military district was the setting for the important change of leadership of the Italian Army General Staff. General Pietro Serino left the baton to his parigrade Carmine Masiello, in a ceremony that highlighted the indissoluble link between the Armed Forces and the memory of the fallen of all wars, symbolised by the homage to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altar of the Fatherland.
The event is not only significant for the change of command, but also marks a historic moment: General of the Army Corps Carmine Masiello is the first paratrooper to serve as Chief of Army Staff. Masiello's appointment also highlights the Army's openness to leadership that combines experience and skills acquired in one of the most demanding corps of the armed force, the Folgore Parachute Brigade which has seconded from 2010 to 2011.
During the ceremony, passion and commitment to the homeland were the main themes, with the passing of the War Flag between the two Generals symbolising the continuity of dedication and service. The presence of Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and other civil and military authorities underlined the importance of the event for the entire nation.
In an emotional speech, General Serino reviewed his long career, which began in 1974, emphasising the Army's role in the defence of democratic and constitutional values and in the evolution towards a modernisation that respects traditions but is ready for future challenges. He emphasised the importance of loyalty, work ethic and loyalty to the Republic, principles that have guided his career and remain fundamental to the Armed Forces.
Minister Crosetto spoke of continuity and change as indispensable elements for institutions that want to remain faithful to their values while innovating. This vision is perfectly in line with the appointment of a paratrooper as head of the Army, a symbol of an institution that knows how to evolve while holding firm to its principles.
Admiral Cavo Dragone praised General Serino's ability to navigate the complexities of modern scenarios and welcomed General Masiello's priorities, which emphasise training, modernisation and a strong ethical commitment, particularly to young military personnel.
General Masiello, taking the floor, emphasised the importance of military values and a sense of belonging, underlining his commitment to continue in the direction he has taken, with an eye on the need for modernisation and the importance of ethics. His background from the parachute corps adds a three-dimensional dimension to the Army, bringing experience and expertise that promises to guide it with determination and innovation.
His appointment represents a significant step forward for the Italian Army, marking a moment of historic evolution. General Masiello's leadership, rooted in a distinguished career and deep-rooted values, is a clear sign of the Army's ability to adapt and progress, always keeping its commitment to the security and welfare of the nation at the core.
