Brigadier General Roberto Vergori will be the Chief of the new Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, Army Gen. Carmine Masiello. Vergori brings with him extensive military experience and a deep commitment to serving his country.
Born in Lecce on 28 September 1971, he began his career at the Modena Military Academy in 1990, attending the 172nd course, completing his training at the Turin School of Application. Since then, he has served in various command positions within the Italian Army, demonstrating exceptional leadership and unparalleled dedication.
Among his previous assignments, he commanded the 2nd Parachute Battalion 'Tarquinia' of the 187th 'Folgore' Parachute Regimentleading the readiness phase as a manoeuvre unit of the Joint Rapid Reaction Force (JRRF).
He was also Commander of the Joint Task Force 'Taormina 1' during the 'G7', held in TAORMINA, and Head of Division J3 (Operations) of the COVI (Interforce Summit Operations Command).
As a colonel, he served as Commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment 'Aosta' and was promoted to Brigadier General from 2021 to 2023, Commander of Folgore Parachute Brigade.
During his career, General Vergori actively participated in out-of-area operations in places such as Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Libya, acquiring a wide range of air force skills.
General Carmine Masiello, whose commitment and determination are well known in the military, is actively shaping a team of the highest calibre.
Vergori's appointment as Chief of the General Office is a clear sign of his excellence-oriented vision, reinforcing the leadership of the armed force with outstanding individuals ready to meet the challenges of the future with determination and skill, and also underlines his desire to ensure that the Italian Army is led by highly qualified and dedicated leaders, preparing the armed force to reach unprecedented levels of prestige and success. We think, however, that the issue should be framed from another point of view.
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto's decision to appoint key figures from the paratroopers specialty to top positions in the Italian Army is an unequivocal sign of change in the country's military strategy.
With the appointment of General Masiello as Chief of Staff, and, as early as October, General Iannucci as the new Chief of the Defence Minister's Cabinet, a move towards a more dynamic and flexible approach in the management of the challenges facing the armed force is evident.
Crosetto's choices could prelude a more proactive and adaptable vision of defence, capable of responding promptly and innovatively to the complexities of the international scenario.
