The NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, recently concluded a visit to the United States, which focused on strengthening cooperation between NATO and the United States in preparation for the summit to be held in The Hague. During his visit, Rutte had high-level meetings with leading political and military figures, including President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, at the Pentagon.

The upcoming summit in The Hague promises to be a crucial event for the future of NATO and transatlantic security. Rutte emphasised the need for a significant increase in defence investment by European allies and Canada to ensure a stronger NATO ready to respond to global challenges. In particular, the growing threat from Russia and the commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine were central themes in the discussions.

The Call for More Investment in Defence

During his visit, Rutte issued an appeal to all 32 NATO members to devote more political, financial and material resources to defence. This message comes at a delicate time, with the United States progressively reducing its direct commitment to European security, making the need for defensive self-sufficiency on the part of the European allies ever more urgent.

The Secretary General made it clear that in order to ensure the security and prosperity of member countries, it is crucial for NATO to maintain a significant military edge. According to Rutte, 2025 represents a decisive year to increase collective efforts to strengthen the Alliance, thus ensuring that it remains a strategic force for all its members. His statement is a clear call not to let our guard down, with a particular focus on NATO's crucial role in containing threats from Russia and other unstable geopolitical areas.

NATO's Commitment to Ukraine and European Security

NATO support for Ukraine was a recurring theme in meetings between Rutte and US leaders, including President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Despite growing uncertainties regarding the future of US foreign policy, Rutte reiterated NATO's commitment to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian invasion. The Secretary General acknowledged that the situation in Ukraine is still fluid, but stressed that the Alliance remains united in its desire to achieve a just and lasting peace for the country.

However, there is no shortage of difficulties: in a context where direct US involvement in European defence seems to be diminishing, NATO will have to rely on increasingly close cooperation between European members and Canada. Forecasts on future support for Ukraine, however, are still uncertain, with the possibility that the country's entry into the Atlantic Alliance may be questioned, especially due to resistance from some members.

The upcoming summit in The Hague therefore promises to be a turning point for NATO. The decisions that will be taken could determine the future of the Alliance in an increasingly unstable world, with Ukraine continuing to remain a central dossier. With pressure mounting for greater allied engagement, NATO is preparing to consolidate its role as the guardian of collective security, strong in its ability to adapt to new global challenges.
