Israel moves the Paratroopers Brigade to Gaza: a new phase in the conflict begins
The conflict between Israel and Hamas enters a new critical phase. The Israeli army (IDF) announced the transfer of elite troops, including the Parachute Brigade and the Nahal Brigade, to the Gaza Strip in preparation for a further expansion of military operations in the Palestinian enclave.
According to the official announcement, the paratroopers, previously deployed along the Syrian border under the command of the 210th Division, have now been assigned to the 98th 'HaEsh/Fire' Division, active in the north of the Gaza Strip.
In parallel, soldiers of the Nahal Brigade, until a few days ago deployed in the West Bank, have been reassigned to the 162nd Division, which is also set to operate in northern Gaza. During their recent deployment, the Nahal Brigade arrested over 100 wanted suspects, seized dozens of weapons, and neutralised several militants considered to be terrorists.
Replacing these troops in their home areas will be thousands of reservists, already mobilised and heading for the Golan Heights and the Syrian border. However, it remains uncertain whether reinforcements will also be deployed in the West Bank to fill the void left by the Nahal Brigade.
The transfer of forces and the reorganisation of military divisions follow an official decision by the Israeli security cabinet, which on 2 May approved the expansion of military operations in the Gaza Strip. The plan, strongly supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, envisages total military control of the northern area of Gaza and the forced relocation of the civilian population to the south of the enclave.
Netanyahu stated that this plan aims to achieve two strategic goals: the final defeat of Hamas and the return of the Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. To this end, the IDF has already issued mobilisation orders for tens of thousands of reservists, in view of a massive expansion of the invasion.
According to military sources, the offensive will be conducted in stages and may take days or weeks to be fully implemented. The complete 'clearing' of northern Gaza is also planned, with the forced removal of civilians to the south, where the Israeli government has announced the launch of a new pilot programme of humanitarian assistance.
