The 'Cambrian Patrol', one of the most prestigious international military competitions, hosted by the headquarters of the 160th (Welsh) Brigade in Wales, UK, recently concluded. The Italian Army achieved an excellent result, with the Savoia Cavalry Regiment (3rd) who won the silver medal, once again demonstrating their ability to excel in highly competitive environments. The event was also attended by the 152nd Infantry Regiment 'Sassari'confirming Italy's solidity in the international arena.
The 'Cambrian Patrol' is an annual event involving 111 patrols, including 39 from 36 different countries. This exercise is one of the British Army's major training tests, known for its high level of difficulty. The teams must tackle a 60-kilometre route to be completed in 48 hours, carrying equipment weighing around 40 kilograms.
Along the way, patrols are tested on a series of tactical and technical tasks: from reacting to CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) threats to treating casualties, passing through recognising enemy vehicles, demining, defending against enemy drones (UAS) and crossing fords, culminating in a team attack. These scenarios simulate real-life operational conditions, requiring not only physical strength and endurance, but also mental alertness and responsiveness in dynamic contexts.
Prior to the competition, the 'Savoie Cavalry' personnel participated in intensive training together with the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards (QDG), one of the British Army's most prestigious cavalry units. This cooperation was fundamental in refining competition-specific techniques and operational procedures, allowing the Italian paratroopers to integrate seamlessly with their British comrades. The speed of learning and the professionalism demonstrated by the 'Savoia' aroused great admiration among the British personnel, highlighting the effectiveness of joint training.
The 1st QDG, founded in 1685is a historic regiment based in Norwich, known for its vast training area and for having had the current King Charles III among its commanders. The British regiment maintains strong links with the royal family, with Princess Kate Middleton currently named honorary commander.
Participation in the Cambrian Patrol offered the Italian units an important opportunity for comparison with allied armies and partners. This competition is not only a test of operational effectiveness, but also an opportunity to strengthen international ties and underline the spirit of cooperation that characterises modern armed forces. The performance of the 'Savoia Cavalleria' demonstrated once again that esprit de corps, physical and mental endurance, and a high level of professionalism are distinctive traits of the Italian Army.
In an increasingly competitive environment and with growing operational challenges, the silver medal won by the 'Savoia Cavalry' Regiment at the 'Cambrian Patrol' is a prestigious achievement for Italy and a sign of the Armed Forces' continued commitment to ensuring international readiness and competence.
