La Armoured Brigade 'Ariete' recently completed one of its most ambitious exercises, called "Steel hardening". The exercise was distinguished by its high degree of realism, replicating the conditions of an actual conflict under the auspices of theArticle 5 of NATOwhich provides for the collective defence of alliance members.
"Temper of Steel", planned to increase and refine the operational capabilities of the units, fitting into the broader NATO programme of enhanced Vigilance Activity (e-VA) in Bulgaria, integrated different types of training activities, including the Command Post Exercise (CPX) for the Brigade Headquarters, and the exercises "Demeter 1/24" and "Artemis 1/24", led respectively by the 32nd Tank Regiment and the Novara Lancers Regiment (5th).
During the exercise, both 'fire' and 'white' manoeuvres were conducted, covering all levels from platoon to battlegroup. This involved various departments of the Brigade, including armoured and line cavalry, heavy infantry, artillery and engineers, allowing for a refined interaction between the different operational functions. In addition, the technical-tactical procedures of the combat, combat support and combat service support components were tested and refined, together with enablers such as EW (Electronic Warfare), IMINT (Imagery Intelligence) and AVES (Aviation Support).
The Task Force of the 32nd Tank Regiment and the 5th Lancer Regiment conducted offensive operations, overcoming natural obstacles and engaging enemy mechanised units to degrade their operational capabilities. In parallel, reconnaissance activities were carried out to protect the main effort.
The presence of Brigadier General Domenico Leotta, Commander of the 'Ariete' Brigade, and the Commander of the French 7th Armoured Brigade, Gen.B. Philippe L. Le Carff, underlined the strategic importance and international scope of the exercise.
With 'Steel Temper', the 'Ariete' Brigade not only strengthened its operational readiness but also demonstrated its ability to operate effectively as Multinational Brigade HQ and Forward Land Forces, crucial elements of the Atlantic Alliance's collective defence and security.
