A Symbol of Dignity: the Italian Military Insignia of Recognition

Recognition of soldiers, particularly during wartime operations or out-of-area missions, is a key aspect of ensuring their identity and dignity. In emergency situations, such as accidents, imprisonment or death, the ability to quickly identify a soldier and gather vital information can make all the difference. In the context of the Italian armed forces, the dog tag plays a crucial role. This small and simple instrument, which accompanies the soldier during service, contains essential information such as the soldier's name, date of birth, blood group and, if required, religion. Its usefulness is obvious, but it is not only limited to functionality: the dog tag is a symbol of belonging and sacrifice.

According to the Ministerial Circular of 28 March 2025signed by Deputy Director General, Colonel Fabrizio Ratto Vaquer, "the dog tag/identification medallion has been confirmed as a fundamental tool for identifying military personnel of the Armed Forces and Carabinieri, in the event of imprisonment, death in wartime, or out-of-area missions". This small object, which seems almost banal in its simplicity, is actually a testament to the care and attention with which the Italian armed forces regard the safety and identity of their soldiers.

Features and how to use the plate

The dog tag is a device that must be worn by soldiers around the neck, via a chain, and is made of stainless steel that is resistant to extreme temperatures. Its standard dimensions are 34x45x0.8 millimetres, with a predetermined fracture line that makes it divisible into two parts. This division is essential in the event of a soldier's death: the upper part, which is tied to the chain, is left on the body, while the lower part is sent to the command or body in charge for the necessary administrative and documentary formalities. The information engraved on it includes the first name, surname, place and date of birth, matriculation number, blood group and Rh factor, and religion (if required).

Another important aspect is the accuracy of the data contained in the plate. According to the provisions of the circular, the accuracy of the blood group and Rh factor is crucial, and for this reason, Armed Forces personnel must ensure that any information is correct. Moreover, religion is a piece of information that is only engraved at the explicit request of the soldier, and in the case of missions in particularly critical areas, such as conflict zones, the decision to include this data or not can be reserved.

The circular confirms that, despite the suspension of compulsory conscription and the abolition of military districts, the dog tag remains one of the most important tools for the documentation and identification of serving soldiers. Its function, besides being operational, also has a strong symbolic value, representing a link between the soldier and his country, and a commitment to the protection of the individual.

Symbolic meaning

Over the years, the dog tag has had different meanings, but it always remains a symbol of recognition and honour. It is not just an identity document, but a witness to the life and sacrifice of those who have chosen to serve their nation. Its primary function is to ensure identification in the event of an accident, but in the context of the Italian armed forces, it also represents a point of pride and a sign of respect for those who serve.

The historical significance of this object goes back a long way. During the world wars, the need to identify soldiers became increasingly urgent. Italian soldiers, as well as those of other nations, began to carry a small piece of metal containing essential personal information. These dog tags were often used to identify those killed in battle and ensure that their families could obtain the necessary information in the event of their death. The dog tag, therefore, represents the historical memory of a time when every soldier faced the risk of never returning home.

In the more modern context, the importance of the dog tag has not changed. Although modes of warfare have changed, and technologies for soldier identification have advanced, the dog tag remains an irreplaceable part of the soldier's kit. It is part of a security system that today includes other forms of identification, but its simplicity and symbolism are what make it a timeless object.

In addition to its identification function, the dog tag has become an emblem of courage and sacrifice, a silent witness to the millions of soldiers who have served and continue to serve around the world. Its presence testifies to a deep commitment to the protection and security of one's nation, even at the cost of one's life.

The Ministerial Circular of 28 March 2025, confirming the use of the dog tag as a 'completion of matricular documentation', also underlines how its importance goes beyond its practical function. It is a sign of identity, but also of respect, for those who have dedicated their lives to the defence of their country, confirming that although technologies may change, certain symbols remain unchanged.
