Supreme Defence Council: Italy Ready to Strengthen Global Security

Yesterday, the Quirinale Palace was the stage for a crucial meeting for national security, the Supreme Defence Council, chaired by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. The meeting was attended by the main institutional leaders of the Italian government, including the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, along with other leading government figures, such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi.
The central theme of the meeting was the analysis of global security challenges, in particular the conflict in Ukraine and the tensions emerging from the Middle East. Council members examined the issues addressed in the European Commission's White Paper on European Defence Readiness 2030. The intent of this document is to address critical issues at Europe's borders, highlighting the need for collective defence strategies, both at the European and global level.

The Council emphasised that the current geopolitical tensions are undermining international stability, endangering the security of the entire continent. Russian aggression in Ukraine, in particular, has had a devastating impact on the region, with a direct repercussion also on EU member states. The proposed solutions were based on enhanced cooperation within NATO, with Italy ready to support the allies with its own military and diplomatic contribution.
The importance of NATO and Italy's commitments
The Atlantic Alliance was defined as the primary guarantee to avert the possibility of a major armed conflict. The Council reiterated the importance of Italy's active participation in collective security missions, particularly in the context of north-eastern Europe, where Italian forces are deployed to reinforce the defence of European airspace. In addition, the Council recalled how Italy has made clear commitments in NATO, such as that of allocating 2% of GDP to defence spending, a commitment that has been repeatedly subscribed to by various governments, starting in 2014.
Italy continues to be a point of reference for stability in the region, contributing significantly to European and international peacekeeping and conflict prevention missions. The Italian armed forces are committed to ensuring the security not only of its own borders, but also of the collective security within NATO and the European Union. The Council recognised the importance of maintaining a prompt and effective response capability to any external threat, with a particular focus on operations in which Italy is directly involved, such as those in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Global challenges and the evolution of defence technology
In the context of growing global threats, the Council raised the importance of defending critical national infrastructures, with particular attention to cyber attacks and the growing threat in the space domain. Protection against cyber attacks has become a priority for Italy, which, like all European countries, has to cope with new forms of hybrid warfare, in which fake news and disinformation are used as strategic weapons.
The Council also emphasised the need to support the development of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, which is transforming the global defence landscape. Italy is working to strengthen its technological defence capability, investing in innovation and the development of advanced technologies to meet the challenges of the future. Artificial intelligence, in particular, is taking a central role in strategic planning and military operations, supporting autonomous systems that can improve the operational efficiency of armed forces.
Finally, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to support the peace process in Ukraine and the stabilisation of crisis areas in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. In particular, Italy declared its support for a peaceful and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, supporting the creation of two independent and sovereign states. International dialogue, with the commitment of the international community, remains a priority for Italy, which highlighted its active role in mediation and support for global security.
