Amid escalating international tensions and hybrid threats attributed to the Kremlin, the United Kingdom and France are coordinating one of the largest airborne operations of the past twenty years. During October, thousands of soldiers from the armed forces of the United Kingdom and France joined forces as part of the large-scale military exercise "Rhino Titan", held on German territory. The primary objective of the maneuvers was to demonstrate NATO's capability and readiness to defend its territory against potential foreign aggression.
Lasting seven weeks and hosted at the Sennelager training area in Germany, the exercise involved more than 2,500 military personnel. A highlight was the drop of approximately 600 paratroopers from the United Kingdom and France, deployed in a combined operation by four RAF A400M Atlas transport aircraft.

The geopolitical context and the challenges of modern warfare

The joint maneuvers come at a time of heightened concern for European security due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing Russian provocations along the borders of the Atlantic Alliance. Western intelligence services continue to closely monitor infiltration operations and accusations against the Kremlin involving sabotage, arson, and threats within European countries.
During the simulated Rhino Titan scenario, the troops faced a hypothetical adversary capable of extensively employing attack drones and advanced electronic warfare systems.Among the air assets employed were also three Chinook heavy-lift transport helicopters from the Royal Air Force, whose crews trained in rapid evacuation and the air transport of medical aid stations for battlefield casualties.
«Alongside our French and German allies, this large-scale exercise demonstrates that we can deploy a rapid and formidable airborne force wherever needed to defend NATO territory.»
— Wes Streeting, UK Secretary of State for Defence

The strategic synergy between London and Paris

Preparations for the Rhino Titan exercise had already been announced in spring 2026 as part of the British "Year of Air Manoeuvre" program.
The operation's success is part of a series of high-intensity bilateral training exercises between France and the United Kingdom.Just days before the maneuvers in Germany, the two countries’ air forces had completed joint nuclear strike simulation training with Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, following earlier airborne brigade exercises conducted at the beginning of the year during Exercise Orion 26 on French territory.
