The ceremony of awarding the specialty shoulder patch to about ninety young volunteers newly assigned to the 8th Engineer Sappers Paratroopers Regiment “Folgore” took place recently at the Legnago headquarters. A moment of high symbolic value that marks the official entry into the unit and represents the synthesis of two elite specialties of the Italian Army: that of the sapper and that of the paratrooper. The shoulder patch is not just a distinctive sign, but the recognition of a selective and demanding path, based on the centrality of the individual, on the high level of training, and on a continuous process of innovation.
The ceremony, held in the presence of the War Flag, represented a true rite of passage, through which the young soldiers became part of a cohesive professional community, where the esprit de corps is a fundamental multiplier of operational effectiveness. In his speech, Colonel Daniele D’Ambrogio, the regiment's Commander, highlighted how the achievements are the result of daily sacrifice, dedication, and professionalism, urging the new paratrooper sappers to preserve and honor the values that distinguish the unit.
To testify to the ideal continuity between past and present, the banners of the ANPDI sections of Triveneto and Poggio Rusco (MN), of the ANGET, and of the National Sappers Group were present.
Tradition and continuity in an excellent unit
In front of the sappers and paratroopers of yesterday and today, the new assignees renewed their commitment, recognizing themselves in the identity values that constitute the true strength of the 8th regiment, especially in the most complex moments of operational activity. Tradition is not lived as mere historical memory, but as a living heritage, capable of guiding daily behavior and strengthening the resilience of the unit.
The 8th regiment represents a unique entity on the national scene, being the only unit of paratrooper sappers of the Italian Army. Specialized in supporting the airdrop maneuvers of the Paratroopers Brigade “Folgore”, the unit operates in contexts characterized by high technical and environmental complexity, maintaining consistently high standards of readiness and reliability.
The constant cycle of national and multinational exercises allows the regiment to consolidate interoperability with other units and allied assets, strengthening the link between tradition and innovation and ensuring full integration into the most advanced operational devices of the Armed Forces.

Development of capabilities and operational prospects
The significance of the Legnago ceremony takes on further relevance in light of the central role that the 8th Engineer Paratrooper Sappers Regiment “Folgore” plays in the transformation process of the Army. For about a year, the unit has been at the forefront of a development phase related to combat capability in underground environments, now considered one of the most complex operational challenges of the modern battlefield.

Tunnels, underground infrastructures, and stratified urban contexts require a highly specialized approach, which demands the integration of engineering skills, close combat capabilities, and solid physical and mental preparation. In this context, the Folgore paratrooper sappers confirm themselves as an essential tool, thanks to the combination of airborne mobility, engineering specialization, and operational adaptability.
The organic strengthening of the regiment, through the entry of new specialists, directly contributes to increasing the flexibility and operational readiness of the unit. The awarding of the shoulder patch thus becomes not only a symbolic moment but a concrete piece of a strategic vision oriented towards the future, in which the 8th regiment continues to stand out as an excellent unit at the service of the country.
