Italy Honours the Fallen with a Symbol of Remembrance

A new Italian tradition to honour the Fallen and Veterans of the Armed Forces

Italy distinguishes itself today with a gesture of high symbolic and identity value: the adoption of the Myosotisalso known as Forget-me-notsas an official flower in memory of the Fallen for the Fatherland. This initiative, proposed by the Italian Military Valour Gold Medal Grouprepresents an absolute novelty and a hallmark, a true flagship for our country.

The GMOVM conducted a careful study to identify a flower that could best express Italian identity and the value of memory. The choice fell on the Myosotisa blue flower - the same azure Italy featured on the shirts of our athletes and in the Armed Forces banners - with five petals evoking the Star of Italysymbol of the Republic. A flower that expresses loyalty, eternal love and remembrance, values deeply linked to the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers in war and peace missions.

A tradition that ranks among the great symbols of memory in the world

This Italian initiative complements established traditions in the Anglo-Saxon and French worlds. In the countries of the Commonwealthsuch as the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the red poppy is now the international symbol of the memory of the fallen. Born from poetry "In Flanders Fields by John McCrae, the red poppy grew on the battlefields of Flanders, among the crosses marking the graves of soldiers, becoming an icon of resilience and sacrifice.

In Francethe flower of memory is the Bleuet de Francethe cornflower, which originated from the initiative of two nurses in the aftermath of the Great War. The Bleuet symbolises solidarity and respect for veterans, families of the fallen and victims of terrorism. This flower also recalls the blue of French soldiers' uniforms and the colour of the national flag.

The recognition of Italy: honouring those who have served and those who serve the Fatherland

With the adoption of the MyosotisItaly is introducing a unique symbol that is deeply rooted in its history and culture. Armed Forces personnel are now authorised to wear a pin depicting the flower on major anniversaries:

  • 2 November, Commemoration of the Dead;
  • 4 NovemberNational Unity Day and Armed Forces Day;
  • 11 November, Veteran's Day;
  • 12 NovemberDay of Remembrance of Military and Civilian Fallen in International Missions for Peace.

Worn on the left lapel of the uniform, the Myosotis represents not only respect for those who have fallen, but also the continuity of the bond between the Nation and its Armed Forces. A gesture that reinforces the pact between citizens and the military, reaffirming the eternal value of memory and loyalty to the homeland.

Conclusion: Italy sets an example of memory and gratitude

The project 'Fallen for the Fatherland, Flagship of the Italians' is part of an international context of great sensitivity towards the sacrifices of the Armed Forces and veterans. But it does so with an all-Italian style and symbolism, paying tribute not only to the fallen of all wars, but also to serving personnel and veterans.

It is an important recognition, which testifies to Italy's willingness to honour its military with pride and respect, offering the Italian people a symbol to cherish and pass on. The Myosotis thus becomes the visible and lasting sign of a nation that does not forget its heroes.
