The Bucharest government has indeed awarded the German giant Rheinmetall a strategic contract for the supply of the ultra-modern Skyranger 35 air defense systems.

This order is part of a broader Romanian armed forces modernization program worth a total of 5.7 billion euros. The agreement includes combat vehicles, naval units, short-range Skynex systems, and two Millennium cannons dedicated to maritime air defense. While Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have secured the Baltic area — also targeted by repeated airspace incursions — Romania consolidates the southern sector at a time when the NATO operation Sentinel of the East, launched in September 2025 following a Polish invocation of Article 4, demonstrates how the eastern front is a priority for the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.
