The Italian government has written a new chapter in the history of the Armed Forces by appointing General of the Army Corps Carmine Masiello as the new Chief of the Army General Staff. The appointment marks the first time in 83 years, since 1941, that an officer from the paratrooper specialty has reached the highest position in the Italian Army. The decision, made today on the proposal of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, sees General Masiello succeed General Serino, introducing a new era of leadership within the Italian land forces.
General Masiello brings with him an exceptional resume and profound military experience. Throughout his career, he has held numerous key roles, including Commander of the 185th Reconnaissance Target Acquisition Regiment (RRAO) "Folgore" in 2008 and of the Paratrooper Brigade "Folgore" in 2010.
His career continued with his appointment as Deputy Director General of the Department of Information for Security in January 2018, highlighting his capabilities not only in the field but also in the complex dynamics of national and international security. On January 1, 2019, his professional growth path was further consolidated with his promotion to General of the Army Corps.
On May 17, 2021, the Council of Ministers appointed him Deputy Chief of the Defense General Staff, paving the way for his subsequent and historic appointment as Chief of the Army General Staff.
A progression that testifies not only to the exceptional personal and professional qualities of the man but also to the evolution of the Italian Armed Forces, increasingly oriented towards valuing skills and diversifying experiences within its personnel.
The appointment of General Masiello represents a moment of pride for the paratrooper specialty, an Aquila 1 is, finally, after 83 years, Chief of the Army General Staff.
The choice of a paratrooper as Chief of the Army General Staff marks a turning point and opens new perspectives for future generations of military personnel. It demonstrates that leadership, courage, and innovation, intrinsic values of the paratrooper specialty, are fundamental guiding principles for the challenges the Italian Army will face in the future.
We welcome General Carmine Masiello with enthusiasm and confidence in this new phase of command. His leadership will surely be a source of inspiration for all members of the Armed Forces, reaffirming Italy's commitment to the defense of peace and security, both at home and abroad.
