9º Col Moschin, the War Flag leaves Vannucci: it will be kept at Vitali in Pisa
The relocation of the 9º Reggimento d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin” to Pisa has taken another significant step forward. On October 2, at the “Vannucci” barracks in Livorno, a ceremony was held for the transfer of the Regiment’s War Flag, which will now be kept at the “Ten. M.O.V.M. Dario Vitali” military complex in Pisa.
Among those attending the ceremony were the Commander of the 9º Regiment, Colonel Andrea Bandieri, and the Regimental Senior Enlisted Leader, Primo Luogotenente Nicola Zonta.
The news was announced by Hon. Paola Maria Chiesa, Fratelli d’Italia group leader on the Chamber of Deputies’ Defense Committee, who attended the ceremony and reported the transfer of the War Flag to the “Vitali” complex through her social media channels.
The Pisa facility, now home to COMFOSE (Comando delle Forze Speciali dell’Esercito), is also set to become the new headquarters of the 9º Reggimento d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin”, upon completion of the relocation process from the historic “Vannucci” barracks in Livorno.
A symbolic step in the relocation of the “Nono”
BrigataFolgore.net reported in advance on February 17, 2026 that the 9º “Col Moschin” would relocate from the historic Vannucci barracks in Livorno to the military complex in Pisa.
The movement of the War Flag now represents one of the most symbolically significant steps in this process.
The Flag is not merely a ceremonial item: it represents the history, traditions, and decorations of the military unit that safeguards it.
The one now entrusted to the 9º Reggimento d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin” holds particular historical significance. In 1976, in Florence, the 9º Battaglione d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin” was presented with the Bandiera di Guerra del X Reggimento Arditi, whose traditions the unit safeguards and passes on together with those of the IX Reparto d’Assalto.
The War Flag of the “Nono” is decorated with una Croce di Cavaliere dell’Ordine Militare di Savoia, due Croci di Cavaliere dell’Ordine Militare d’Italia, tre Medaglie d’Argento al Valor Militare, una Medaglia d’Oro al Valore dell’Esercito e una Medaglia d’Argento al Valore dell’Esercito.
Its transfer from Livorno to Pisa therefore carries clear institutional significance, in addition to its logistical importance, accompanying the gradual relocation of the Regiment’s elements to their new headquarters.
The transfer of the Command to “Vitali”
The move had been planned for some time.
In March 2025, the Army Infrastructure Command launched the procedure for the repurposing of Building 413 at the “Dario Vitali” barracks, expressly identifying the relocation of the Command of the 9º Reggimento d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin” as its purpose.
The project’s overall budget was set at approximately €6 million. The contract was subsequently awarded in July of the same year.
The work does not concern only the Command offices.
In January 2026, the Army launched a further repurposing program, this time involving Building 501, intended to house the relocated Reparto Addestramento Incursori of the 9º Reggimento, with activities funded in fiscal years 2026 and 2027.
The transfer of the War Flag therefore does not necessarily mean that all the Regiment’s components and activities have already physically completed their move. However, it represents a particularly significant step in the process of concentrating the “Nono” in Pisa.
The Army Special Forces hub
The selection of the “Vitali” also reflects the gradual concentration of Army Special Forces capabilities in the Pisa area.
The 9º Reggimento operates under the authority of the Comando delle Forze Speciali dell’Esercito (COMFOSE), established in Pisa and responsible for coordinating the Army’s specialized units.
The move will bring “Col Moschin” still closer to the Special Forces command structure and to the other capabilities based in the area, providing benefits in coordination, training, and support.
For Livorno, meanwhile, this marks the gradual conclusion of a phase lasting more than sixty years.
The unit’s presence at Vannucci barracks dates back to the early 1960s, when the Battaglione Sabotatori Paracadutisti was based there. Through subsequent organizational transformations, that unit evolved into today’s 9º Reggimento.
From Vannucci to the barracks named after Dario Vitali
The name of the new base also holds particular significance for the incursori.
The Pisa military complex is named after Lieutenant Dario Vitali, Gold Medal of Military Valor, an Arditi officer of the IX Reparto d’Assalto, the Great War unit from which the 9º “Col Moschin” draws its traditions.
More than a century after the exploits of the Arditi of the IX Reparto d’Assalto, the Army incursori’s War Flag is therefore being transferred to the very complex bearing the name of one of the protagonists of that history.
This step goes beyond a simple change of location and marks a new chapter in the history of the 9º Reggimento d’Assalto Paracadutisti “Col Moschin”.
