A long era of Italian Air Force training concludes in Frosinone. With the transfer of the 72nd Wing to Viterbo, the historic “Girolamo Moscardini” airport, operational since 1939, ends its era dedicated to helicopter pilot training that began in 1955. A significant transformation that does not, however, diminish the military role of the area.

Thanks to the institutional work of Deputy of the Republic Aldo Mattia and Honorable Maria Veronica Rossi, the airport will indeed maintain a leading role in national training, becoming the site of the new Interforce School for Military Drone Pilots, operational from 2026.

This is a transition that renews Frosinone's aeronautical identity, projecting it towards emerging technologies and new operational scenarios.

The New National Drone Hub: Technology, Security, and Operational Capability

The establishment of the Interforce Training School for Drone Pilots represents a significant step for the national defense system.
The center will become a reference point for all Armed Forces, with specific programs dedicated to remotely piloted systems, now essential in security, monitoring, and tactical support operations.

In the current international context, characterized by increasingly advanced technologies and complex war scenarios, drones play a decisive role in reconnaissance, intelligence, surveillance, and personnel protection on the field. The decision to place a training center in Frosinone responds to a strategic need for modernization and interforce coordination.

The school will enable the development of:

  • highly specialized professionalism,
  • technical skills updated to the latest operational standards,
  • new opportunities for collaboration with the aerospace sector,
  • a training path in line with the needs of contemporary missions.

The Moscardini thus becomes a national center of excellence, capable of integrating innovation, advanced training, and operational capabilities, with positive impacts on the area in terms of skills and development prospects.

An Infrastructure in Step with the New Defense Needs

The establishment of the school has garnered widespread appreciation for its ability to enhance a historic airport and integrate it into the new dynamics of security and aerospace. The creation of the center represents a long-term investment, allowing the combination of aeronautical tradition and technological modernity in a rapidly evolving global context.

Looking to the future, the work of defining programs, educational organization, and operational synergies will constitute the core of the next phase. The structure will be able to collaborate with various interforce components and specialized industrial entities, contributing to the growth of a rapidly expanding sector.

Frosinone thus assumes a concrete and constructive role within the national landscape, becoming the Italian hub for military drone pilot training.
A choice that strengthens the country's ability to respond to the new challenges of Defense and Aerospace, offering the city a stable, modern, and highly qualified perspective.

From 2026, the Moscardini will not only be a place of memory but an operational laboratory of the future, where the skills called to guard the skies of tomorrow are formed.
