Understanding where fighting is happening today is relatively simple. More difficult is reconstructing where Italy intervened in recent decades, with which missions and what human price that presence entailed.

From this need arises the War Room of BrigataFolgore.net, an interactive section designed to bring together current events, military history and memory through maps, data and in-depth information sheets.

Where fighting is happening today

The first level of the War Room is dedicated to the main armed conflicts and security crises underway in the world.

The section "Where fighting is happening today" uses an interactive map that allows you to identify the different theaters and distinguish them by type.

The archive currently contains 20 conflicts, divided into four categories:

• 4 wars
• 3 civil wars
• 7 insurgencies
• 6 situations of widespread violence

Each scenario is georeferenced and can be consulted directly from the map.

The objective is not only to indicate where conflicts are occurring, but to provide an immediate reading of an increasingly fragmented international landscape, in which internal conflicts, insurgencies, armed groups, and situations of prolonged violence accompany wars between States.

Italian missions abroad

The second level of the War Room changes perspective.

No longer simply: where are we fighting today?

but also: where has Italy been engaged from the post-war period to today?

The section dedicated to Italian missions abroad reconstructs the presence of the Italian Armed Forces outside national borders since 1949.

The archive includes 145 international missions, of which 45 are still ongoing and 100 concluded.

The operations have been conducted under various international frameworks: UN, NATO, European Union, multinational coalitions, and bilateral agreements.

On the map appear theaters that have deeply marked recent Italian military history: Lebanon, Somalia, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Middle East, and Mediterranean.

The visualization allows for a single-screen view of the global dimension of Italian engagement abroad, far more extensive than what normally emerges from daily news.

The human cost of missions

The third level of the War Room is dedicated to memory.

Alongside the missions appears the archive of Italian State servants who fell in international missions from 1949 to today.

Currently 184 fallen are recorded.

Military personnel from the various Armed Forces, Carabinieri, members of the police forces, personnel from services and auxiliary corps.

The map immediately highlights the theaters where Italian losses were concentrated, while the archive allows for deeper investigation into names, units, specialties, dates and circumstances.

Among the categories present are, among others:

• 30 Carabinieri
• 27 members of the Aeronautica Militare
• 23 Alpini
• 15 members of Army Aviation
• 14 Paratroopers
• 11 members of Special Forces

But the significance of the section is not in the numbers.

Behind every piece of data are men, units, families and personal stories.

From Congo to Somalia, from Iraq to Afghanistan, the archive attempts to preserve the memory of those who lost their lives during Italian engagement beyond national borders.

The War Room is designed as a dynamic tool of the blog, intended to be updated with the evolution of conflicts, the opening or closing of missions and the progressive integration of archives.

Information is reconstructed through institutional sources, official documentation and open sources, with subsequent reworking to make it more easily consultable.

The objective is simple: to transform scattered data into a visual and immediate tool, accessible not only to practitioners but also to those who want to better understand what is happening in the world and what Italy's role has been over time.
