U.S. Army and Marines: The Rise of Argus AI Platform to Combat Cognitive Threat

The deployment of artificial intelligence in U.S. defense information operations rests on solid foundations, marked by key milestones that unite the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps. The technology at the center of this transformation is Argus (also known in its variants as Argus Social or Argus for Cognitive Advantage), developed by dual-use company Accrete.

From Origins with the U.S. Army to Adoption by the Marines

Argus's trajectory in the military sector experienced significant acceleration when the U.S. Army awarded Accrete a multimillion-dollar contract to enhance Argus Social capabilities in support of its information operations. Already successfully evaluated by the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and listed on the Tradewinds marketplace, the system was simultaneously adopted by U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM).

This technological ecosystem subsequently expanded to the Marine Corps, which selected the platform to track and analyze narratives on social media, broadcast, and messaging platforms in near-real time.

How Argus Knowledge Engines Work

The backbone of Argus is represented by Accrete's proprietary Knowledge Engines, tools designed to convert the tacit human knowledge of expert analysts into autonomously generated knowledge graphs. These systems semantically combine dynamic and unstructured data from social media, enabling AI agents to reason, learn, remember, predict, and act at superhuman scale.

  • Open data analysis: The platform draws from OSINT sources, open web, social media, and foreign portals (including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Telegram, Weibo, and VKontakte).
  • Multimedia and linguistic capabilities: Processes hours of video in minutes, translating and transcribing in real time streams in 243 languages.
  • Operational functionality: Includes modules for predictive narrative analysis (stance detection), audience simulation, automated effectiveness metrics, and the conversational interface Argus Chat.

A Response to Hybrid Warfare and Disinformation

As highlighted by Accrete's leadership, the exponential proliferation of synthetic media generated by artificial intelligence and deliberate manipulation of truth by hostile actors risk overwhelming the traditional reasoning capabilities of analysts. According to CEO Prashant Bhuyan, when a persistent narrative goes viral, what matters is no longer its intrinsic truthfulness, but the fact that people believe it and act accordingly.

Argus's integration enables government agencies to reduce analysis time from weeks or months to just seconds, effectively countering digital threats below the threshold of conventional conflict.
