Moments of apprehension on the public beach of the “Tombolo” nature reserve, in the municipality of Scarlino, where the bomb disposal experts of the Army's 2nd Pontieri Engineer Regiment of Piacenza intervened to neutralize two artillery shells dating back to the Second World War.
The ordnance, found last night along the shoreline, turned out to be Italian shells with a diameter of 75 millimeters, 26 centimeters long and weighing 6.3 kg each, containing 370 grams of high-explosive material.
Coordinated by the Prefecture of Grosseto and the North Operational Forces Command of Padua, the military secured the area, already reached by numerous bathers. The shells were then transported to a safe area, in the locality of Val Citerna, where they were detonated under maximum safety conditions.
The intervention confirms the Army's constant commitment to protecting the community. Since the beginning of the year, the bomb disposal experts of the 2nd Pontieri Engineer Regiment have already neutralized 4 aerial bombs, 1 naval depth charge, and over 190 war devices of various types in the 13 provinces under their jurisdiction, between Emilia and Tuscany.
A silent but fundamental job, which demonstrates how the Italian Army continues to ensure the safety of the territory and its citizens every day.
