While international attention tends to view conflicts as isolated, concluded episodes, an analysis of geopolitical developments in the Middle East shows that the confrontation has never truly stopped.Despite the declaration of fragile temporary truces, the reality on the ground paints a picture of a war that has never truly ended, fueled by the ongoing and progressive militarization of the region.

Deployment of new forces and military buildup

The Pentagon has recently ordered the deployment of additional forces to the Middle East, with an estimated increase of between 9,000 and 10,000 additional personnel. This major mobilization includes the deployment of strategic naval assets, including carrier strike groups such as the USS Theodore Roosevelt, the USS George H.W.Bush and the USS George Washington, as well as amphibious assault ships and Marine units.

The deployment of these forces is not a routine rotation, but a structural reinforcement intended to ensure a permanent military presence that is ready for combat. The deployed units include air defenses specialized in countering Iranian missiles and drones, as well as the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, capable of conducting complex operations in hostile territory.

The fragility of agreements and the continuation of the conflict

The political and military situation remains extremely tense. Diplomatic negotiations and ceasefire proposals – such as the one recently put forward and rejected by the U.S. administration – are colliding with a low-intensity but constant pattern of confrontation. The previously agreed truce proved short-lived, and the two sides continued to clash intermittently and sporadically.

Tensions also extend to control of key commercial and strategic routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for global oil transit. The U.S. Navy maintains a constant presence of about twenty ships in the area to enforce blockades, escort merchant vessels, and counter direct threats, such as the recent launch of ballistic missiles against U.S. naval vessels.

Toward a New Escalation?

The prospect of a broader resumption of bombing operations and targeted strikes highlights that the deterrence strategy has not led to a definitive resolution of the crisis. On the contrary, the prolonged wear on Navy resources, combined with the constant extension of deployment rotations for crews and special units, shows that the armed forces are operating in a context of permanent conflict.

In conclusion, the Middle East continues to exist in a state of "armed peace" or latent conflict, in which war has never been consigned to history, but has remained confined to a dangerous stalemate, ready to reignite with every diplomatic failure.
