According to an investigation by the Financial Times, a secret hunt and a silent war are sweeping across Europe.According to statements obtained from at least five European counterintelligence agencies, the Gru — Russia’s military intelligence service — has reportedly set its sights on the executives and managers of Europe’s leading defense industries.
A worrying escalation
This is not just espionage, but an unprecedented escalation: Moscow’s agents are reportedly planning targeted assassinations of those leading companies that supply Ukraine with weapons and technology, breaking what had until now been considered a taboo for Moscow’s intelligence services.
Russian military analyst Konstantin Sivkov explains the logic behind this strategy: since missiles such as the Storm Shadow and drone components used to strike Russia are manufactured or assembled in Europe, Moscow considers those supplying such systems to be legitimate targets.
A “Mossad-style” model and Europe’s response
European intelligence agencies are on maximum alert.The fear is that the Gru intends to replicate on European soil a secret war similar to the one once used by Israel to eliminate Iranian nuclear scientists.
For this reason, many executives involved in rearmament projects for Kyiv have been placed under surveillance and protection.In Germany, the domestic security agency (BfV) has recommended that companies assign their executives dedicated bodyguard teams.As highlighted by BfV chief Sinan Selen, Russia is reportedly planning deliberate acts of violence on European territory, also using intermediaries and organized crime.
