The integration of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) into tactical support operations has reached a new stage of development. The specialist teams from Malloy Flight (Delta Squadron, 48 Commando) have standardized the assembly, preflight inspection, and launch procedures for the Malloy T-150, reducing the launch window to just 3 minutes in daytime configuration and 5 minutes in nighttime configuration.
The aim of the training is not merely speed of execution, but the survivability of the logistics cell: reducing time on the ground minimizes electromagnetic and visual signatures, mitigating the risk of detection by enemy surveillance and direction-finding systems.
Tactical module and employment scenarios: Exercise Strike Warrior
During the recent NATO exercise Strike Warrior at the Spadeadam range, the UK Commando Force tested its resupply capability in highly contested (A2/AD) environments. Lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine informed the new guidelines:
BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) flight: Conducting missions beyond visual line of sight using waypoint navigation and collision-avoidance systems, ensuring frontline resupply without exposing crewed aircraft.
Quick Reaction Sortie procedure: Intensive training for recruits and non-specialist personnel to standardize and make drone setup repeatable under physical and psychological stress and in poor visibility.
Payload Management: Optimizing balance for heavy-lift platforms carrying up to 68 kg, with compartments dedicated to heavy ammunition, disassembled weapon systems, and blood bags.
"A single uncrewed system enables a squad to generate the tactical effect of a force 12 times larger," emphasized Major Rhys Adkins (OC Delta Squadron)."Reducing the individual operator's logistical footprint means preserving the unit's combat capability, while increasing lethality and maneuver flexibility."
Operational profile of the Malloy T-150 platform
The system's employment has been validated through a series of environmental and naval stress tests that define its operational parameters:
Maximum payload capacity: Up to 68 kg of equipment carried per sortie.
Arctic environment (-28°C): Deployed in Norway to transport 81 mm mortars (barrel, bipod and baseplate), ammunition and EOD robots (mine clearance) in support of 40 and 45 Commando.
Naval Operations (Ship-to-Ship): At-sea resupply between the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and the destroyer HMS Dauntless during Carrier Strike Group operations.
Operational Relief / HADR:Ship-to-Shore transport of more than 240 kg of aid and medical supplies to isolated communities (HMS Trent, Caribbean).
Impact on Commando Force doctrine
The introduction of the Malloy platform redefines the classic concept of "yomping" (a fully loaded tactical march). While physical conditioning remains a fundamental pillar for the Royal Marines, automated tactical support reduces the critical load carried by each operator, enabling faster movement, reduced physical wear and tear, and a decisive logistical advantage during the approach to the objective.
