Italian missions abroad
Where we were and where we are today. 130 international missions of the Italian Armed Forces from 1950 to today, reconstructed based on official dates of the intervention areas.
Seventy-five years beyond the borders
The first was AFIS – Amministrazione fiduciaria italiana della Somalia, in 1950. Since then the Italian Armed Forces have operated in 70 different theaters, among countries and maritime areas, with 130 documented missions: 87 concluded and 43 still ongoing.
The longest-standing commitment still active is UNMOGIP, launched in 1959: 67 years of continuous presence. The most distant theater ever reached is East Timor, with 12.544 kilometers as the crow flies from Rome (INTERFET – Operazione "Stabilize", 1999 – 2000).
The decade of maximum expansion is the one that began in 2010, with 35 missions launched. The prevailing framework remains that of the United Nations, ahead of NATO and the European Union.
The most recent ones were authorized in 2026: Bilateral Mission in Iraq, Bilateral Mission in Somalia, Financial Police Mission in Tunisia.
The price of this commitment is documented for 22 missions, in which 160 Italian military personnel fell. The most serious losses in Afghanistan, in Iraq and in the Congo, where in November 1961 the massacre of Kindu cost the lives of thirteen airmen from the 46ª Brigata aerea. The attribution of the fallen to individual missions is derived from the cross-reference between the list of names published by the Ministry of Defense and the chronology of the episodes. The total considers military personnel and auxiliary corps staff, not civilians who died in the same theaters.
The dates indicate the period of actual deployment of Italian personnel. Main source: Italian Defence General Staff, list of intervention areas as at 31 December 2022 — determination of the Chief of Defence Staff of 17 May 2023, ref. M_D AB05933 REG2023 0353209, supplemented for subsequent missions by the Council of Ministers resolution of May 14, 2026 and by Armed Forces sources.
