Luciana Littizzetto sued by Lieutenant Pasquale Trabucco for statements on the Armed Forces

The Army Lieutenant Pasquale Trabucco, retired officer and President of the Committee for 4 Novemberfiled a lawsuit against the comedian Luciana Littizzetto following statements made in the 9 March 2025 episode of Weather, a programme hosted by Fabio Fazio. Durante il programma, la Littizzetto ha letto una lettera ironica indirizzata alla Presidente della Commissione Europea Ursula Von der Leyen, mettendo in dubbio la capacità dell’Italia di contribuire a un ipotetico esercito europeo. Nel suo monologo, la comica ha sostenuto che gli italiani “non sono capaci di fare la guerra” e ha citato episodi storici come Caporetto, la Campagna di Grecia e la Seconda Guerra Mondiale per sostenere la sua tesi. Lieutenant Trabucco considered the comedian's statements offensive to the dignity of the Armed Forces and explained the reasons for his legal action:

I took this decision because I think certain things should not be touched. I mean the dignity of our men in uniform. As the Committee for the Restoration of the 4 November Holiday, I considered it a necessary symbolic act for our fallen soldiers in battle. For example, Giuseppe Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo Italian officer, commander of the Clandestine Military Front, martyr at the Fosse Ardeatine and Gold Medal for Military Valour in his memory. I refer not only to our soldiers, but also to the Partisans of the Resistance. Of course I am willing to withdraw the complaint in the event of a public apology.

The National Observatory for Asbestos (ONA) also took a position on the issue, expressing solidarity with the Armed Forces. Lawyer Ezio Bonanni, president of ONA, stated:

L'ONA - National Asbestos Observatory strongly supports the action of our armed forces, which are the garrison of freedom and justice.
Credit must be given to those who were able to honour the flag and the homeland without retreating, those who resisted, for example, in Russia even in numerical inferiority in equipment and armament. And they retreated because of the wicked choices of the Germans, who preferred to concentrate all their troops inside Stalingrad, offering their flank to uncovered fronts including the Romanian one.
Our men, including the alpini. were then overwhelmed. The First World War restored national integrity with the Italianisation of Trento and Trieste. I also refer to the Second World War, to the Decima Mas before the armistice, or when in Sicily the army resisted 20 to one against the Anglo-American forces that were also supported by Mafia elements. Or the Nikolajevska massacre in Russia of the Alpine Army Corps that hardly anyone remembers, where we lost an entire army corps of alpini. The history of our armed forces is a glorious one. I do not agree with Littizzetto's words. It saddens me that the institutions have not re-established these principles and we trust that for now and for the future there will be more respect for our men in uniform."

The lawsuit filed by Lieutenant Trabucco has raised a heated debate between those who defend satire as a free form of expression and those who believe that certain statements have crossed the line of institutional and historical respect. It remains to be seen what Luciana Littizzetto's reaction will be and whether the affair will have further developments.
