Latina, defused World War II aircraft bomb: intervention by Army bomb disposal experts - brigatafolgore.net

The bomb disposal experts of the Italian Army have today concluded an important operation to clear a World War II explosive remnant: a 500-pound aircraft bomb, found near the industrial area of via della Gogna, in the territory of the province of Latina.

The intervention was conducted by specialists from the 21st Engineer Regiment, a unit belonging to the Bersaglieri Brigade “Garibaldi”, who operated in close collaboration with the Prefecture of Latina and local authorities, strictly applying all safety procedures required for this type of operation.

The intervention of the bomb disposal experts

Before the neutralization phase of the ordnance, preliminary earth-moving works were carried out, necessary to secure the area. The operations were carried out using specialized vehicles, materials, and equipment of the Army Engineers, with the aim of constructing an on-site containment structure capable of reducing any effects of an accidental detonation.

Subsequently, the bomb disposal experts initiated the most delicate phase of the operation: the removal of the fuse and the bomb's sensitive components. These components were then destroyed through two controlled detonations, executed according to the technical procedures provided for the neutralization of explosive remnants of war.

Once completely rendered inert, the ordnance was safely transported to a quarry located in the municipality of Priverno, where it was definitively destroyed through controlled detonation.

A constant activity on national territory

The interventions of occasional clearance of explosive ordnance found on Italian territory represent a daily activity for the specialists of the Army Engineers.

These are highly specialized operations that require advanced technical skills, rigorous safety procedures, and coordination with prefectures, police forces, and local authorities.

Even today, more than eighty years after the end of World War II, Italian territory continues to yield unexploded explosive remnants. The intervention capability of the Army bomb disposal experts therefore represents a fundamental component for the protection of citizens' safety and for securing the affected areas.
