General Masiello Meets Military Chaplains: “An Essential Presence in the Lives of Our Soldiers”

Today, at the Pio IX Officers’ Club in Rome, General Carmine Masiello, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, met with a group of Military Chaplains from across Italy. The event was also attended by the Military Ordinary of Italy, Monsignor Gian Franco Saba, and the Episcopal Vicar for the Army, Father Gianfranco Pilotto.

The meeting comes just months after the conclusion of celebrations marking the centenary of the Italian Military Ordinariate. During his remarks, the Chief of Staff addressed the challenges of today’s operational environments, reaffirming that the chaplain’s role is an essential presence within the ranks of the Italian Army. Their ability to listen, offer human support, and provide spiritual ministry helps preserve and strengthen the values that guide every service member, while maintaining a strong sense of community within units.

Masiello stressed that chaplains accompany and support soldiers, always placing human dignity and the principles of solidarity, respect, and dedication at the center—values that define the very identity of the military institution.

The meeting served as an opportunity for constructive dialogue on the mission of Military Chaplains in providing a listening ear, moral support, and closeness to service members and their families. The Chief of Staff expressed his appreciation for the chaplains’ daily commitment, describing them as a steady point of reference for commanders and personnel. Their dedication carries on the tradition of sacrifice and service rooted in Saint John XXIII, patron saint of the Italian Army.
