Bundeswehr Drones Revolutionize Rescue and Autonomous Medical Evacuation

I droni della Bundeswehr rivoluzionano i soccorsi e l'evacuazione medica autonoma

The Bundeswehr continues to enhance its unmanned aerial capabilities. As announced by the Armed Forces Support Command, the company Avilus has been tasked with developing the innovative project for the rescue drone “Grille”.

The contract, signed at the beginning of April 2026, represents a crucial step in expanding autonomous aerial capabilities, set to play a central role in future medical evacuation missions and logistical operations.

The Innovative Project: “Qualified Unmanned Aerial Patient Transport”

At the heart of the project is the experimentation with cutting-edge technologies for the military medical service. The agreement specifically includes:

  • Supply: Delivery of two unmanned flying systems of the “Grille” type.
  • Testing: Conducting thorough flight tests.
  • Training: Comprehensive training courses for operators intended for the military.

The objective of the practical tests is to precisely adapt the system to the specific needs of the armed forces through direct use by the Bundeswehr's medical service.

Implementation and Integration into the Rescue Chain

The program will commence with a training phase dedicated to soldiers, followed by intensive flight activity.

«Innovative solutions are more important than ever to ensure a resilient and efficient rescue chain in the future.»

Lieutenant General Dr. Ralf Hoffmann, Commander of the Bundeswehr Central Medical Service

The tests aim not only at technological development but also at smoothly integrating modern autonomous systems into an uninterrupted rescue chain.

The manufacturer also views the cooperation very favorably. Niclas Bähr, CEO of Avilus, stated:

«We are proud to take this step together with the Bundeswehr and to contribute to the future and resilience of the rescue chain.»
