Historic triumph: the Challenge Trophy returns to Modena... to stay

L' Modena Military Academy wrote another memorable page in its history, winning for the third consecutive edition the prestigious Challenge Trophy in the XXXII edition of the Military Academies Tournament. Thanks to top performances in the disciplines of the swimming, athletics, volleyball e precision shooting with pistol cal. 0.22, the team made up of Academy Cadets and Officers from the Turin Army Officer School, together with the Carabinieri Cadets from Rome, achieved a clear and well-deserved success. The cup, a symbol of inter-forces military sporting excellence, now enters definitively on the notice board of Palazzo Ducale, the historical seat of the Military Academy of Modena, consecrating a winning cycle distinguished by perseverance, discipline and team spirit.

The Inter Academies Tournamentwhich was initiated by the Defence General Staff in 1967, today represents one of the most significant moments in the Armed Forces' training calendar. It involves the four main Italian academies - Modena, Livorno, Pozzuoli and Bergamo - in a biennial competition that combines sport, training and confrontation between about 250 athletesselected from the best cadets from each institute. The disciplines envisaged - athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball and shooting - They test not only their physical fitness, but also their ability to work as a team, maintain concentration under pressure and represent their corps with honour.

This year, the event took place at the Military Academy sports facilities, in the prestigious setting of the Ducal Palace of Modena, an institution that for over 160 years generations of officers for the Army and the Carabinieri. The tournament kicked off with a solemn opening ceremony, during which the traditional Athlete Oathand concluded with the prize-giving ceremonywhere the Challenge Trophy was presented to the winners to the applause of the military authorities present.

Team spirit, discipline and military values

During the closing ceremony, Lieutenant General Davide Scalabrin, Comandante dell’Accademia, ha evidenziato con orgoglio il significato di questo risultato: “Motivation, team spirit and willingness to go beyond one's limits sono valori fondamentali per chi indossa un’uniforme”. Il Generale ha inoltre sottolineato come il torneo rappresenti una straordinaria occasione di crescita per gli Allievi, che imparano a confrontarsi non solo nelle competizioni, ma anche nella comprensione delle culture professionali altrui e nello sviluppo di una mentalità interforze.

The competition days were not only dedicated to athletic trials, but also offered moments of sharing, dialogue and confrontation between the participants, strengthening the sense of belonging and esprit de corps. This aspect, less visible but equally relevant, constitutes one of the fundamental pillars of military training: creating bonds between future officers who tomorrow will have to operate side by side in joint missions or international contexts.

The 2025 edition confirmed, once again, the centrality of the Modena Military Academy in the Armed Forces training landscape. Welcoming over 270 athletes and by rigorously managing every phase of the organisation, the Institute lived up to its prestige, not only as a place of training but also as a centre for gathering and enhancing military youth talent.
