High-Intensity Exercise at Capo Teulada: Role 2 and Command Posts - brigatafolgore.net

Teulada (SU), April 2025 – A complex joint exercise concluded at the Permanent Range of Capo Teulada, featuring the Bersaglieri Brigade “Garibaldi” and units from the Army Logistics Command. The training activity aimed to validate command, control, and coordination procedures among operational, logistical, and medical components within a high-intensity operational scenario in a non-permissive environment.

The exercise involved the simultaneous deployment of multiple Command Posts, including those of the “Garibaldi” Brigade, the “Garibaldi” Logistics Regiment, the 4th Tank Regiment, and the 10th Medical Unit. Among the capabilities tested were frontline supply support, recovery of materials and vehicles, and the activation of Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF) of ROLE 2 BASIC and ROLE 2 FORWARD types, advanced medical structures capable of providing surgical support and stabilization of the wounded directly on the field.

The contribution of the medical personnel from the Logistics Command was fundamental, ensuring the full operation of the entire deployed healthcare system, demonstrating a ready response capability in crisis situations. The initiative confirmed the Army's readiness to face complex scenarios and consolidate synergies between operational and logistical units, essential aspects for any modern armed force.

The Role 2 MTF: Field Hospitals for Out-of-Area Scenarios and National Emergencies

The ROLE 2 MTFs represent an essential element of the Army's healthcare capability. These are modular and transportable structures, designed to operate in out-of-area theaters but also to support the population in the event of natural disasters or health emergencies, as demonstrated during the recent pandemic. The ROLE 2B model includes modules dedicated to emergency, surgery, diagnostics, intensive care, hospitalization, pharmacy, and health management. The more advanced ROLE 2E versions also include laboratories, mental health facilities, dentistry, and isolation capabilities for infectious diseases.

Thanks to their modular configuration and rapid transport capability, the MTFs are a valuable resource for both overseas military operations and timely intervention on national territory. Integration with other logistical and tactical components ensures effective management of healthcare assistance on the battlefield, significantly reducing response times and improving the survival of severely injured personnel.

Command Posts and C2 Vehicles: The Use of VCC 577

A key element of the exercise was the use of field Command Posts set up on tracked vehicles VCC 577, employed by all involved units. These vehicles, derived from the M113, once again demonstrated their versatility in supporting command and control activities in complex operational contexts. In particular, the adoption of these vehicles allowed full integration between operational, logistical, and medical components, offering protection, mobility, and continuous communication capability.

The VCC 577 were used as mobile platforms for managing tactical operations, ensuring security for operational staff even in scenarios characterized by multidomain threats. Thanks to the possibility of installing advanced radio equipment, modules for cartographic support, and systems for real-time coordination, the Command Posts on 577 allowed effective management of maneuver and simultaneous support at multiple levels. The coordination between the “Garibaldi” Brigade Command Post, the Logistics Regiment, and those of the 4th Tank Regiment and the 10th Medical Unit represented a model of integration to be replicated in future training and real contexts.

This capability, fully exercised during the activity at Teulada, proved fundamental for the overall effectiveness of the exercise, confirming the importance of investing in the modernization of C2 vehicles and in training personnel capable of operating in digitized environments with high operational intensity.

Conclusions

The exercise at Teulada and the ongoing programs to enhance the Army's medical and armored capabilities testify to the constant evolution of the national military instrument. The synergy between maneuver, logistics, and healthcare, combined with investment in modern and versatile means, confirms the Armed Force's commitment to ensuring readiness, effectiveness, and response capability in any operational scenario, both at home and abroad. The integration of advanced technologies such as those of the VCC 577 and ROLE 2 MTF represents a decisive step towards an Army increasingly projected into the future, ready to face the challenges of the new global operational landscape.
