The Brigata Paracadutisti “Folgore” concluded a seven-day training session on October 19, 2026, dedicated to airdrops from a German Air Force Airbus A400M. The aircraft was deployed to Pisa Airport for the occasion.
The activity alternated personnel and cargo airdrops. The paratroopers used static-line systems and manually deployed parachutes, employing free-fall techniques.
For cargo, the CDS, an acronym for Container Delivery System, was used. The session included drops both during daylight hours and at night.
Cooperation with the Luftwaffe and EATC
The training took place within the Airborne Community, with the participation of NATO countries and partners. The European Air Transport Command (EATC) also took part.
The EATC is the multinational command responsible for coordinating the military air transport of seven European countries, including Italy. The activity aimed to enhance the international and joint interoperability of airborne forces.
The A400M, according to the Esercito Italiano, is operated by the leading Allied nations. Its use enabled Italian paratroopers to train with the Luftwaffe, integrating procedures and equipment.
Eighty paratroopers dropped each day
The session also received logistical support from Pisa's 46ª Brigata Aerea. Activities were organized daily in daytime and nighttime shifts.
On average, 80 paratroopers and 4 CDS loads were airdropped each day. According to the Esercito Italiano, these volumes enabled “Folgore” to significantly increase its training level.
The Brigata Paracadutisti “Folgore” is a highly deployable combat formation of the Esercito Italiano. It is prepared to operate at very short notice, deploying its units far from the homeland to conduct any type of military operation.
