The longest-running among those surveyed is Conflitto residuo — Colombia, opened since 1964: 62 years. Most of the current conflicts do not originate from a declaration of war but from internal crises that have become chronic.
The parties involved number 62, including states, coalitions, armed groups and international organisations: the figure shows how rarely a contemporary conflict has only two sides.
The profiles are based on open sources and editorially reviewed. Casualty estimates, when indicated, come from international organizations and should be considered as approximate and likely understated.
