In a significant step towards strengthening Italian military capabilities, BAE Systems Hägglunds and Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) have announced a new strategic collaboration for the production and localization of the BvS10 off-road vehicle in Italy. The agreement, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), lays the foundation for a technological and industrial synergy aimed at meeting the specific needs of the Italian Armed Forces.
The agreement represents an important evolution in the relationship between the two companies, already tested in previous collaborations, and is based on two main pillars: the localized design of the Italian variants of the BvS10 and the domestic production of the vehicle, with the goal of enhancing the skills and workforce present in Italy. As highlighted by Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, Managing Director of BAE Systems Hägglunds, this alliance aims to ensure targeted and reliable support to Italian defense, fitting into the broader context of strengthening European security.
“This partnership combines the technical expertise of both companies, ensuring that the BvS10 is designed to support Italy's defense needs,” stated Gustafsson-Rask.
Innovation and Capabilities of the BvS10
The BvS10, developed by BAE Systems, is considered one of the most versatile and advanced military vehicles in the world. It is an articulated, armored, and amphibious vehicle, capable of operating in extreme conditions where other vehicles fail. Its main strength is its advanced mobility, allowing it to move effectively on snow, ice, rock, sand, mud, and mountainous terrain, as well as in flooded areas and coastal waters.

Thanks to its modular structure, the BvS10 can be easily adapted to different operational missions. Its variants include troop transport, command and control, field ambulance, recovery and repair vehicle, logistical support, and weapon transport, even with mortar capability. This flexibility makes it an ideal platform for strategic, tactical, and operational mobility in crisis or combat scenarios.
“The BvS10 represents the perfect combination of mobility, payload, and protection,” reads the joint statement from the companies.
Currently, the vehicle is already operational in numerous European countries such as Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine, testifying to its reliability and proven qualities in the field. The introduction of the platform in Italy will also allow for greater logistical interoperability with these partner nations, strengthening joint European capabilities to respond to emergency situations.
Enhancing National Industry and Future Prospects
For Iveco Defence Vehicles, this new collaboration represents another step in consolidating its role as a key player in the Italian defense industry. The CEO of IDV, Claudio Catalano, expressed full confidence in the success of the project, emphasizing how the combination of engineering and production skills of the two companies will lead to the creation of a vehicle fully meeting the requirements of the Armed Forces.
“We will leverage the expertise, technological know-how, and experience of IDV and BAE Systems to supply the BvS10 to the Italian Army,” stated Catalano.
In addition to enhancing military capabilities, the partnership will also bring significant economic and employment benefits. The use of local labor and the creation of production chains in Italy will contribute to strengthening the national industrial fabric and ensuring autonomous supply security, an increasingly strategic element in the current geopolitical context.
Looking to the future, this agreement could also pave the way for further technological collaborations, not only in the production of the BvS10 but also in the development of new integrated platforms, in line with the emerging needs of the modern operational theater.

With this initiative, BAE Systems Hägglunds and Iveco Defence Vehicles not only strengthen the Italian national defense but also contribute to a broader European security architecture, founded on industrial cooperation, technological innovation, and shared strategic vision.
