KAILUA-KONA (Hawaii) – “Luca, you are an Ironman!”. The announcer’s voice rings out loud and clear along Ali’i Drive, the legendary road on Hawaii’s Big Island that marks the finish line of the Ironman World Championship. Amid the crowd’s excitement, on Sunday an exceptional man added another extraordinary chapter to his life: Luca Parmitano, a test pilot Colonel in the Italian Air Force and an ESA astronaut, is officially a finisher in the toughest endurance race on the planet.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better day, either in terms of the weather or the beauty of the surroundings,” Parmitano said immediately after crossing the finish line.

Under the scorching Kailua-Kona sun, where blistering asphalt melts dreams and lava fields swallow every last reserve of energy, Parmitano turned the discipline and resilience honed during space missions into the strength needed to conquer hell on Earth. He completed his race in an astonishing time: 10 hours, 27 minutes and 01 second, cutting a full two hours off his previous Hawaii performance (12h30’) and achieving his goal of finishing the race before sunset.

From Deep Space to Ocean Waves

Born in Paternò in 1976, with more than 2,000 flight hours logged on over 40 different aircraft, a degree in Political Science and a master's degree in Flight Engineering, Luca Parmitano has always been a giant of modern exploration:

  • 2013 (Missione Volare): The first Italian to conduct a spacewalk (EVA), handling a dangerous technical malfunction involving his helmet with composure and courage.
  • 2019 (Missione Beyond): The first Italian to serve as Commander of the International Space Station (ISS).
  • Future: Selected as a pilot for the Artemis III program, which will see humanity return to the Moon.

But this extraordinary physical and mental strength has found a new outlet in extreme endurance. Taking on the Hawaii world championship means mastering three unforgiving disciplines: 3.8 km of swimming through the Ocean waves, 180 km by bicycle battered by the deadly Ho’ukua winds, and finally a 42.195 km marathon on foot.

A lesson in mental control and determination

From the very first kilometers, his race became a masterclass in managing fatigue, determination, and mental discipline. Living proof that for someone who can master survival in space and possesses iron discipline, nothing is impossible.

On the eve of the challenge, the astronaut-athlete himself described his mindset on social media as follows:

“The day before an Ironman is always a confusing mix of emotions: on the one hand, I tell myself it’s just a hobby and that it doesn’t matter how well I do; this is already a victory lap, since qualifying for the world championship has always been my goal. Today, I will practice shifting my mental outlook from 'why am I here?' to 'wow, I’m here!', I will smile and be grateful for this privilege.”

The final result speaks for itself: an incredible achievement, born of humility, preparation, and willpower. A true example for all of us and for anyone who sees duty, sacrifice, and pushing beyond one’s limits as a guiding beacon in everyday life.

Incredible, dear Luca. And thank you for the lesson!
