In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the use of advanced technologies of artificial intelligence (AI)<\/strong> marked a radical transformation of military operations. The \"Lavender<\/strong>\"developed by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), represents one of the most controversial and discussed applications of AI in the modern theatre of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new operational paradigm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Based on algorithms of deep learning<\/em> and data mining, the Lavender system is designed to identify military targets - particularly Hamas members - through the automated analysis of a wide range of data, collected through the mass surveillance<\/strong>. Together with the complementary software \"Where is Daddy?<\/strong>\"It allowed tens of thousands of potential targets to be flagged, with each one associated with a suspicious behaviour or recurring pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approach introduces a new paradigm compared to the past, when human evaluation was central to the targeting process. With AI, the process is structured in five stages<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Identification<\/strong> of the suspect via AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Association<\/strong> of the target to a residence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Weapon selection<\/strong> appropriate (drones, precision munitions or conventional bombs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Authorisation of Collateral Damage<\/strong>with initial policies accepting up to 15 civilians killed for every Hamas member<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Automated calculation of collateral damage<\/strong>based on estimates via mobile data.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The effectiveness and limitations of the system<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The model proved to be quick and efficient, but not without critical ethical and operational issues<\/strong>. For example, estimating collateral damage based solely on the number of mobile phones in a building caused significant errors<\/strong>striking civilian homes even in the absence of confirmation of a military presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To mitigate these risks, the IDF has implemented preventive procedures such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Launching notices<\/strong> before the attacks via social media, SMS, voice messages and phone calls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Drones with speakers<\/strong> and parachuted radio transmitters with evacuation instructions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tactical breaks<\/strong> in the attacks to allow civilians to escape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Humanitarian corridors<\/strong> biometrically checked to identify militiamen hiding among the refugees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      The example of Rafah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      These measures were also replicated during theRafah operation in May 2024<\/strong>allowing the early evacuation of large urban areas. According to military sources, this approach has reduced civilian casualties<\/strong>constituting a reference model for western major states<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
