We thus continue the discourse started in our previous in-depth study on the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/parachutists-to-the-words-of-littizzetto-2\/\">General Bertolini and Lieutenant Colonel Paglia's response to the comedian's less than honourable statements<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Italy<\/strong> actively participated in all major <strong>international military operations<\/strong>conducted by the <strong>NATO<\/strong>, from the<strong>UN<\/strong> and by <strong>international coalitions<\/strong> at <strong>extremely complex theatres of operation<\/strong>. From <strong>Lebanon<\/strong> to the<strong>Afghanistan&nbsp;<\/strong>, from <strong>Somalia<\/strong> to the<strong>Iraq<\/strong>, i <strong>Italian military<\/strong> have operated with <strong>professionalism<\/strong>, <strong>dedication<\/strong> e <strong>adaptability<\/strong> in contexts with <strong>high intensity<\/strong>often at the risk of their own lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opinions? No, facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are not opinions, but <strong>facts<\/strong>: a <strong>continuous commitment<\/strong> which has guaranteed and continues to guarantee <strong>security<\/strong> e <strong>stability<\/strong> in numerous <strong>crisis areas in the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving aside the wartime past, with the <strong>victory in the First World War<\/strong>the exploits of<strong> Alessandro Tandura, history's first military parachutist<\/strong>the formidable innovations of the <strong>Arditi<\/strong> and the <strong>MAS flotillas<\/strong> - <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/birth-and-evolution-of-special-forces-an-all-italian-story\/\">that laid the foundations for modern military special forces globally<\/a> - and the heroic behaviour of the Italians at <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-battle-of-el-alamein\/\">El Alamein<\/a> e <strong>Takrouna<\/strong>as well as the courage shown during the <strong>Battle of Culqualber<\/strong>episodes that earned the Italians <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-thunderbolt-and-the-honour-of-arms-a-recognition-between-heroism-and-oblivion\/\">the honour of arms from the enemy<\/a>, the <strong>contemporary history<\/strong> is equally rich in events that attest to the<strong>high professionalism<\/strong>, <strong>capacity<\/strong> e <strong>courage<\/strong> of <strong>Italian military<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Italian soldiers in the service of others<\/strong>committed to protecting and supporting the most <strong>unfortunate<\/strong>often victims of conflicts and humanitarian crises, whose only 'fault' is to have been born in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/culqualber-battaglia-1000x561.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/culqualber-battaglia-1000x561.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13681 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Representation of the Battle of Culqualber, where the Italians sacrificed themselves almost completely, demonstrating such valour as to deserve the honour of arms from their adversaries.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 1980s: starting with Lebanon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Italian mission in an international peacekeeping operation was in <strong>Lebanon, in 1982<\/strong>with the<a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/italcon-lebanon-1982-84\/\">Operation Italcon<\/a>during which an organic battalion remained deployed for <strong>eighteen months<\/strong>. Following the tragic events in the <strong>Palestinian camps of Sabra and Chatila<\/strong>located on the western outskirts of Beirut, and consultations between the <strong>Lebanese Government<\/strong> and the <strong>Secretary General of the United Nations<\/strong>, the <strong>UN Security Council Resolution 521<\/strong>which led Lebanon to request the intervention of a <strong>Multinational Force<\/strong>also involving Italy. The objective was <strong>re-establish the sovereignty and authority of the Lebanese government<\/strong> on Beirut and ensure the <strong>safety of the population<\/strong>. The <strong>15 March 1983<\/strong>, the <strong>Mar\u00f2 Filippo Montesi<\/strong> lost his life in an ambush while on patrol in <strong>Beirut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mission <strong>ITALCON<\/strong> took place from <strong>24 September 1982 to 6 March 1984<\/strong>involving a total of <strong>8,345 Italian military personnel<\/strong>. At the end of the mission, their commitment and outstanding operational capabilities were widely recognised internationally, attesting to their professionalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/filippo-montesi-1000x562.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/filippo-montesi-1000x562.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13682 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mar\u00f2 Filippo Montesi and the vehicle hit by machine-gun fire and hand grenades. He is the first Italian soldier to be killed in peacetime since the Second World War.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation Heron - Iraqi Kurdistan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1991<\/strong>during the <strong>Gulf War<\/strong>Italy took part in the <strong>Heron mission<\/strong>a humanitarian operation aimed at providing <strong>aid to Kurdish refugees<\/strong>. La <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-lightning-parachute-brigade-today\/\">Folgore Parachute Brigade<\/a> deployed <strong>almost 1,000 men<\/strong>, set up <strong>over 600 tents<\/strong> for the reception of refugees and ensured the <strong>security in an area of 1,400 km<\/strong>obtaining <strong>official recognitions from the United Nations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Italian soldiers operated in environmental conditions <strong>extremely difficult<\/strong>thousands of kilometres from the motherland. At first they devoted themselves to the <strong>creation of reception camps<\/strong> and the <strong>provision of assistance and security<\/strong> to the fleeing populations. Subsequently, they were <strong>deployed in front of Iraqi forces<\/strong> retreating northwards under pressure from the Allies, contributing decisively to the stabilisation of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the valour demonstrated, all Italian military personnel participating in the mission <strong>Heron<\/strong> received <strong>the Commemorative Cross<\/strong> of <strong>Ministry of Defence<\/strong>, l'<strong>Certificate of Merit from the Army General Staff<\/strong>signed by <strong>General Goffredo Canino<\/strong>, and the <strong>Certificate of Appreciation<\/strong>conferred by the <strong>Statutory General John Shalikashvili<\/strong> and from the <strong>General Mario Buscemi<\/strong>. The operation began with the arrival in <strong>Palermo<\/strong> of over <strong>1,000 parachutists from Folgore<\/strong> on 26 July, transported by the <strong>46th Airborne Brigade<\/strong> with <strong>C-130 and G-222<\/strong>. The contingent was deployed to guard sensitive targets, reinforce controls and ensure public safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'<a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/sicilian-vespers-sicily-1992-2\/\">Operation Sicilian Vespers<\/a> represented one of the most important deployments of the Armed Forces in the country, marking an unprecedented action in the fight against the Mafia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/vespri2-1000x681.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/vespri2-1000x681.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13684 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Paratrooper checkpoint during Operation Sicilian Vespers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation IBIS - Somalia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>1992 to 1994<\/strong>Italy participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/operation-ibis\/\">IBIS mission<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/somalia-history-and-context\/\">Somalia<\/a>deploying the <strong>second largest contingent after the US<\/strong>. The operation was part of an international intervention aimed at <strong>stabilising the country<\/strong> e <strong>ensuring the security of humanitarian aid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation in <strong>Somalia<\/strong> was dramatic: civil war, an unprecedented humanitarian emergency and the presence of armed groups made any international intervention difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>3 December 1992<\/strong>with the <strong>Resolution 794<\/strong>, the <strong>UN Security Council<\/strong> authorised military action throughout Somali territory, entrusting a group of member states to conduct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy, with the <strong>IBIS mission<\/strong>, provided <strong>military support<\/strong> e <strong>logistics<\/strong> for the <strong>stabilisation of the country<\/strong> and the <strong>protection of humanitarian operations<\/strong>as well as promoting a series of <strong>emblematic initiatives<\/strong> for the reconstruction of the <strong>social fabric<\/strong> of a nation battered by <strong>war years<\/strong>such as the <strong>reopening of schools, hospitals and factories<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/2-july-1993-the-battle-of-the-check-point-pasta\/\">2 July 1993<\/a>during one of the most violent clashes of the mission, the <strong>Italian soldiers<\/strong> faced an intense battle against the <strong>Somali militias in Mogadishu<\/strong>. In that episode <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-italian-fallen-in-somalia\/\">Parachutist Pasquale Baccaro, Staff Sergeant Stefano Paolicchi and Second Lieutenant Andrea Millevoi lost their lives<\/a>while the then <strong>Lieutenant Gianfranco Paglia<\/strong> was seriously injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the mission, Italy suffered <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-italian-fallen-in-somalia\/\">the loss of 14 compatriots, including 11 military personnel, a volunteer nurse and two civilians<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/gianfranco-paglia-1000x568.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/gianfranco-paglia-1000x568.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13685 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lt-Col Gianfranco Paglia, wounded in Somalia on 2 July 1993, is a clear testimony of how serving one's country to help others can leave indelible marks for a lifetime.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation Albatros: Italy on the front line for Peace in Mozambique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Parallel to the commitment in <strong>Somalia<\/strong>, a <strong>equally crucial operational scenario in Mozambique<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Rome Peace Accords<\/strong>signed on <strong>4 October 1992<\/strong> between the <strong>Government of Mozambique<\/strong> and the <strong>RENAMO<\/strong> (Mozambican National Resistance), entrusted the <strong>United Nations<\/strong> the supervision and control of their implementation. The <strong>16 December 1992<\/strong>, the <strong>UN Security Council<\/strong> authorised the<strong>Operation ONUMOZ<\/strong> (United Nations Operations in Mozambique), with the aim of ensuring the <strong>pacification of Mozambique<\/strong>and in detail:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ceasefire monitoring<\/strong> between the local government and the guerrillas of the <strong>RENAMO<\/strong>with the demobilisation of <strong>67,042 government troops<\/strong> e <strong>24,648 RENAMO fighters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weapons collection and destruction<\/strong> of all parties involved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security for humanitarian workers and UN personnel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support for the 1994 elections<\/strong>providing technical assistance and monitoring the process to prevent fraud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy participated in the mission with the <strong>ITALFOR contingent<\/strong>sent in the <strong>March 1993<\/strong> for the<strong>Operation Albatross<\/strong>. The unit, of level <strong>regimental<\/strong>included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1,030 Italian military personnel<\/strong>initially from the <strong>Taurinense' Alpine Brigade<\/strong>then by the <strong>Julia' Alpine Brigade<\/strong>with the <strong>Alpini Parachutist Company 'Monte Cervino' always present<\/strong> in both contingents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Logistics Battalion<\/strong>in charge of logistical support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Army Aviation Squadron Group<\/strong>for transport and air patrols.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health Department<\/strong>responsible for medical care for UN personnel and the local population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nucleus of 5 Carabinieri<\/strong>employed in the functions of <strong>military police<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Italian contingent<\/strong> had the task of <strong>check the Machipanda - Beira Corridor<\/strong>a strategic artery connecting the <strong>Zimbabwe<\/strong> at <strong>Port of Beira<\/strong>providing security and logistical support in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Italy maintained the quota until the<strong>April 1994<\/strong>. After the withdrawal of most of the forces, <strong>230 Italian soldiers<\/strong> of <strong>Health Department and a support unit<\/strong> remained in Beira under the name <strong>'Albatross 2'<\/strong>to continue to ensure the <strong>medical support to UN personnel and the local population<\/strong> until <strong>December 1994<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the<strong>logistical and operational efficiency<\/strong>, the <strong>Italian Contingent<\/strong> was considered a <strong>reference force<\/strong>, providing <strong>medical and logistical support<\/strong> to all forces <strong>UN present in the region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/mozambico-albatros-1000x689.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/mozambico-albatros-1000x689.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13910 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Chimoio - Beira, Mozambique (1993) Alpini of the Taurinense Brigade during a rescue operation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation Hippocampus - Rwanda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the<strong>Operation Hippocampus<\/strong>, in <strong>Rwanda<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/9-moschin-regiment-the-spearhead\/\">9th Regiment Col Moschin Incursors<\/a> were engaged in one of the most risky and complex missions in their history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>10 May<\/strong>after an initial landing at <strong>Nairobi<\/strong>Italian forces arrived at the airport of <strong>Kigali<\/strong>where they were immediately targeted by <strong>mortar fire<\/strong>. The <strong>C-130<\/strong> who had transported them was forced to leave quickly, leaving the detachment on Rwandan territory without available military transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding themselves isolated, the raiders commandeered civilian vehicles, modifying them to suit their operational needs. They moved between <strong>shootings and bombings<\/strong>reaching the Italian civilians still in the capital. <strong>Within a week<\/strong>they completed the<strong>complete evacuation<\/strong>operating in an extremely unstable and dangerous environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>take-off of the last C-130<\/strong>overloaded with evacuated people, the aircraft was targeted by <strong>ZU-23 Soviet anti-aircraft machine guns<\/strong>but managed to leave the country. According to the <strong>Gen. Roberto Vannacci<\/strong>then commander on the ground of the operation, it was <strong>one of the most difficult missions ever faced by the 9th Regiment Col Moschin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation came at a high cost: the <strong>Staff Sergeant Marco Di Sarra<\/strong>ill with <strong>malaria<\/strong>he lost his life shortly after returning to Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/marco-di-sarra-1000x444.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/marco-di-sarra-1000x444.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13686 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">NCO Marco Di Sarra, who died on 30 June 1994 at the age of 31 from an illness contracted during Operation Hippocampus in Rwanda. Di Sarra was posthumously decorated in 1995 with the Bronze Star Medal for Valour of the Army for the fighting on 2 July 1993 in Somalia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Missions in the Balkans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The crisis in the <strong>Balkans<\/strong> saw the involvement of the Italian military in various international operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>1995<\/strong>Italian soldiers were deployed in <strong>Bosnia<\/strong> as part of the<strong>operation SFOR<\/strong>. In <strong>March 1997<\/strong>participated in the <strong>Mission Alba<\/strong>, <strong>multinational operation led by Italy<\/strong>. Although officially aimed at the <strong>distribution of humanitarian aid<\/strong>mission was aimed at <strong>stabilising the political crisis in Albania and preventing the outbreak of civil war<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>April to October 1999<\/strong>, the <strong>General Pierluigi Torelli<\/strong> commanded the <strong>Multinational Brigade North<\/strong> in Bosnia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missions in the<strong>Balkan area<\/strong> continued throughout the <strong>next decade<\/strong>until the end of <strong>2004<\/strong>. From <strong>December 2004<\/strong>management of stabilisation passed to the<strong>European Union<\/strong>which took over with a new mission with a military component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/kosovo2004-1000x634.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/kosovo2004-1000x634.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13697 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Unrest on 17 March 2004 in Kosovo. For its intervention to defend the monasteries of Dakovica and Decane and to protect the Serb villages of Belo Polje, Bica and Grabac, the war flag of the 186th Parachute Regiment Folgore was decorated with the Silver Medal for Valour of the Army.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On the other side of the world - East Timor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>September 1999 to January 2000<\/strong>, i <strong>Parachutists of the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/187-folgore-parachute-regiment\/\">187th Regiment<\/a>together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/1st-carabinieri-parachute-regiment-tuscania\/\">Carabinieri Parachutists Tuscania<\/a> and the <strong>Col Moschin raiders<\/strong>were deployed at <strong>East Timor<\/strong> as part of the<strong>Operation Interfet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in the<strong>extreme south-east Asia<\/strong>, East Timor was the scene of serious violence by groups opposed to its independence from the<strong>Indonesia<\/strong>. In response, the UN, with the <strong>Resolution 1264 of 15 September 1999<\/strong>authorised the sending of a <strong>multinational force<\/strong> under the command of the<strong>Australia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <strong>Folgore battle group<\/strong> was assigned the task of <strong>patrolling and ensuring the safety of the population<\/strong> in areas that are more difficult to reach due to dense vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'<strong>Operation Interfet<\/strong> is remembered as the <strong>farthest mission ever undertaken by an Italian department<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/timorestx2-1000x315.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/timorestx2-1000x315.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13688 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Two emblematic images of Operation Interfet in East Timor: in the first, an Italian paratrooper distributes biscuits to local children, a symbol of the humanitarian support provided to the population. In support of security measures, the <strong>Folgore Parachute Brigade<\/strong> was deployed in the <strong>Genoa airport red zone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the days of the meeting, the <strong>Italian parachutists<\/strong> operated as <strong>Public Safety Officers<\/strong>with the task of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check, stop and search<\/strong> anyone entering or moving around the airport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guarding hangars and sensitive points<\/strong>, applying rigid <strong>rules of engagement<\/strong> for the protection of the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitoring the perimeter area<\/strong> with special forces operators armed with <strong>rifles and night vision<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>20 July<\/strong>paratroopers were assigned a major task: <strong>guarding the perimeter of Air Force One<\/strong>the US presidential plane, ensuring the safety of the <strong>President George W. During the G8 summit in Genoa, it was the paratroopers of the Folgore who ensured its safety.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation Ancient Babylon - Iraq<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the <strong>mission Ancient Babylon<\/strong> (2003-2006) in <strong>Iraq<\/strong>, the <strong>Italian contingent<\/strong> operated in a sensitive area, with <strong>Nassiriya<\/strong> as the nerve centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'<strong>attack on 12 November 2003<\/strong> against the base <strong>Mistral<\/strong> <strong>of Nassiriya<\/strong> marked a turning point. The <strong>6 April 2004<\/strong>Italian units - including the<a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/the-bersaglieri-from-king-carlo-alberto-to-the-present-day-2\/\">11th Regiment Bersaglieri<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/3rd-savoy-cavalry-regiment\/\">Savoy Cavalry<\/a> - were involved in a clash of <strong>18 hours<\/strong>the longest fight for the<strong>&nbsp;Italian Army<\/strong> from <strong>World War II<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The action earned the<strong>11th Regiment<\/strong> the <strong>Military Cross for Valour<\/strong>. Despite the relative stability of the Shia sector, Italy suffered heavy losses, including the <strong>19 fallen<\/strong> in the<strong>bombing of Nassiriya<\/strong>the bloodiest suffered by the Italian Armed Forces in missions abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iraq2-1000x519.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iraq2-1000x519.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13692 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 'skeleton' of the Maestrale base in Nassiriya after the attack in which 12 Carabinieri, 5 Army Soldiers and 2 Italian civilians lost their lives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the difficult Sudan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the<strong>summer 2005<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/183-nembo-parachute-regiment\/\">183rd Parachute Regiment Nembo<\/a> will be deployed in <strong>Sudan<\/strong> in the operation <strong>Nile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>task of the Pistoia Parachutists<\/strong>, framed in the <strong>Task Force Leone<\/strong>is to <strong>enforce the peace treaty<\/strong> signed on <strong>9 January<\/strong> between the <strong>Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir<\/strong> e <strong>John Garang<\/strong>, leader of the <strong>Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA)<\/strong>the main independence movement. This agreement has <strong>put an end to 20 years of war<\/strong> for the control of <strong>southern regions of Sudan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation takes place under the command of the<strong>UN<\/strong>with precise rules of engagement, but in a <strong>delicate and unstable operating environment<\/strong>. The tense atmosphere and difficulties in the field make the mission particularly demanding, but these very challenges enhance the <strong>determination and professionalism of the Italian military<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the<strong>outstanding work of the Leone Task Force<\/strong>, l'<strong>Italy distinguishes itself in peacekeeping in Sudan<\/strong>obtaining a <strong>extraordinary success<\/strong>. The fleet consisted of the <strong>aircraft carrier Garibaldi<\/strong>by landing ships <strong>St Mark's<\/strong> e <strong>San Giusto<\/strong>, from <strong>frigate Espero<\/strong> and the <strong>corvette Phoenix<\/strong>. From the port of <strong>Marghera (Venice)<\/strong> also departed a merchant ship with the <strong>vehicles of the Italian Army Corps of Engineers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of the <strong>2007<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/186-folgore-parachute-regiment\/\">186th Parachute Regiment<\/a> was again deployed in <strong>Lebanon<\/strong>an area already known to the paratroopers of <strong>Siena<\/strong>as Lebanon was the first foreign theatre of operations of the<strong>&nbsp;Italian Army<\/strong>. The regiment had already participated in the <strong>Italcon mission<\/strong> in the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the passage of time, the situation appeared <strong>unchanged<\/strong>with a context of <strong>instability and devastation<\/strong> similar to that of <strong>25 years earlier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>task<\/strong> of the Italian military was to ensure that the<strong>Lebanese operational area<\/strong>intended for the <strong>disarming Hezbollah<\/strong>not to be used for <strong>offensive activities<\/strong>. The officer lost his life in combat on 17 September 2010, while on his way with his detachment to capture Afghan terrorists spotted by a Predator UAV while placing an IED under a bridge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Missions in Afghanistan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>L'<strong>Italy<\/strong> and the <strong>Italians<\/strong> played a central role in the missions <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/isaf-afghanistan-2001-today\/\">ISAF<\/a> e <a href=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/en\/afghanistan-resolute-support-and-sad-epilogue-2\/\">Resolute Support<\/a> at <strong>Afghanistan&nbsp;<\/strong>assuming as early as <strong>2006<\/strong> the command of the <strong>Regional Command West (RC-West)<\/strong>an impressive area of approximately <strong>162,000 km\u00b2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Testifying to the<strong>importance of Italy<\/strong> and its <strong>soldiers<\/strong> during the NATO-led ISAF mission, only <strong>four countries<\/strong> - subsequently reduced to <strong>three<\/strong> - had the <strong>command of the five regional areas<\/strong> (<strong>Regional Commands - RC<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>RC-West (RC-W)<\/strong> - (under Italian command, comprised the provinces of Herat, Badghis, Farah and Ghor)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RC-East (RC-E)<\/strong> - (under US command, included provinces such as Kunar, Nangarhar and Paktika)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RC-South (RC-S)<\/strong> - (under British and later US command, included provinces such as Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RC-Southwest (RC-SW)<\/strong> - (under US command, covered Helmand and Nimroz)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RC-North (RC-N)<\/strong> - (under German command, included northern provinces such as Balkh, Kunduz, Baghlan and Faryab)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/2011-01-25-ISAF-Placemat-3-1-1000x704.jpg.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brigatafolgore.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/2011-01-25-ISAF-Placemat-3-1-1000x704.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Littizzetto and the false myth of Italian military inefficiency - brigatafolgore.net\" class=\"wp-image-13708 webpexpress-processed\"><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Herat was home to Italy's main operational base, Camp Arena. The <strong>headquarters<\/strong> of the mission was initially established at <strong>Kampala, Uganda<\/strong>up to <strong>March 2013<\/strong>subsequently, by <strong>April 2013<\/strong>he was transferred to <strong>Mogadishu<\/strong>at the<strong>Mogadishu International Airport (MIA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Italian national contribution<\/strong>defined by the <strong>Law 131\/2016<\/strong>authorised for the entire <strong>2017<\/strong> the use of a maximum of <strong>423 soldiers<\/strong> e <strong>18 land vehicles<\/strong>with assignments ranging from<strong>training of the Somali Armed Forces<\/strong> at <strong>contingent security<\/strong>, from <strong>logistical and administrative support<\/strong> to the role of <strong>Commander's staff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>2014<\/strong>, l'<strong>Italy<\/strong> assumes the position of <strong>Mission Commander<\/strong>with the <strong>General Massimo Mingiardi<\/strong> as the first Italian commander of the mission. <strong>Currently<\/strong>mission is still ongoing and is under the leadership of the <strong>General Giuseppe Zizzari<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La <strong>EUTM mission Somalia<\/strong> contributes to the <strong>training of Somali soldiers<\/strong>focusing in particular on the preparation of <strong>officers, specialists and instructors<\/strong>.
