The 26 April 2025<\/strong> will be a date that will go down in history. It is the day on which the world bids farewell to Pope Francis<\/strong>in the majestic setting of St Peter's Square. But it is not only spirituality that dominates these hours: the security machine<\/strong> is moving with surgical precision to ensure a world-class event in total protection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For days, images of armed soldiers with strange rifles have aroused curiosity: these are the so-called anti-drone bazooka<\/strong>advanced defence systems adopted at very high-risk events, just like this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 'bazookas' that neutralise drones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Their technical name is Unmanned Aerial System Countermeasure<\/strong>but to everyone they are the 'anti-drone bazookas'. They do not fire bullets, but radio waves that can inhibit communication between the drone and its pilot<\/strong>making it ungovernable or forcing it into a controlled landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The device - often resembling a futuristic rifle - not a traditional weapon of war<\/strong>but an instrument of electronic defence<\/strong>. It is able to detect drone control frequencies and interrupt them in real time, preventing unauthorised aerial filming or - in the worst case scenario - air strikes using kamikaze drones or explosive loads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time these systems have been used: already in 2021<\/strong> the Italian Air Force used them in Qatar, during the Arab Cup<\/strong>, e in 2023<\/strong> appeared during the Ukrainian president's visit to Rome Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>. Today, however, their use is massive and systematic<\/strong> as never before in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International participation will be impressive<\/strong>: confirmed attendance of royals of Spain<\/strong> e Belgium<\/strong>of the British Premier Keir Starmer<\/strong>of the Prince William<\/strong>of the US President Donald Trump<\/strong>of the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz<\/strong>of the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> with his wife, and even the Vice-President of Taiwan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be no<\/strong>instead, Vladimir Putin<\/strong> (who will send the Minister of Culture) and Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The C-UAS Task Force and the control of sensitive areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The andti-drone systems are managed by an Italian Defence Task Force, called C-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System)<\/strong>. They are specially trained military personnel for airspace control in urban, crowded and complex scenarios such as St. Peter's.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of them move with handheld controllers<\/strong> e special backpacks<\/strong> powering the devices, to ensure the maximum mobility in a crowd<\/strong>. The aim: to intervene promptly in the event of suspicious overflights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to manual devices, they are also operational mobile units mounted on military vehicles<\/strong>capable of covering larger areas. The law enforcement<\/strong>, the counter-terrorism unit<\/strong>, i snipers<\/strong> and the secret service<\/strong> complete a complex defence apparatus<\/strong> but at the same time meticulously planned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
