In recent interviews, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, former COFS Commander e Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and from 17 January, he emphasised that 'peace is not free, but war is immensely more expensive'. He emphasised the need to increase military spending more efficiently, pointing out that the fragmentation between NATO and EU countries prevents economies of scale and increases costs.
The defence of industrial sovereignty has contributed to the technological backwardness of European industry. He also warned against the current threat, considering it equal to, if not worse than, the Cold War. He reiterated the urgency of increased defence efforts, pointing out that the threat is on Europe's doorstep and that Allied countries must strengthen their military preparedness.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Drago reiterated the importance of supporting the Ukrainian army to ensure a 'just peace' with Russia. During his visit to Kiev, he met with the President Zelensky and Ministers Umarov and Sybiha, emphasising the Ukraine's determination to defend its territory. According to Dragoon, the Russian army achieves limited success at the cost of heavy losses, with an average of 7-800 Russian soldiers killed or wounded per day. He pointed out that Putin's initial plan of a quick victory failed.
On Donald Trump's statements regarding a possible dialogue with Putin, Dragone emphasised that NATO maintains a firm stance on transatlantic security, regardless of political developments. He emphasised the importance of international meetings such as the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Ramstein and the Munich Security Conference.
NATO and Ukraine, peace is not free here either
Dragone stated that NATO follows three principles: ensure Ukrainian strength to negotiate from a solid position, provide support for its defence and respect international law. He emphasised the absence of concrete signs of willingness to negotiate on Putin's part and the risk that a freeze in the conflict would give Russia time to reorganise for a new aggression.
Regarding Ukraine's possible membership in NATO, Drago confirmed the commitment made at the 2024 Washington summit, emphasising that the path is now irreversible. He recalled the military support provided to Ukraine, with more than EUR 50 billion in aid and training centres.
On the possibility of the US halting aid under a Trump presidency, Dragone expressed scepticism about a total halt, assuming rather a rescheduling. He pointed out that Europe already makes a significant contribution and could increase it, again peace is not free!
